Guthrie Lady Jays and Western Heights Lady Jets met for the third time this season, Friday evening, with Guthrie winning the first two match ups. In those games, senior post Jessica Peacock averaged 18 points. The third time, Western Heights was ready.
The Jets packed the middle with a 2-3 zone defense and held Peacock to 4-points before fouling out. Guthrie made a late rally in the fourth, but fell 50-46 inside the Guthrie gymnasium.
The zone defense also led to a frustrating night for Guthrie shooters from behind the 3-point line. The Lady Jays were a combined 1 of 24 from beyond the arc (4%). Senior Brittany Berryman hit an early 3-pointer, but then Guthrie missed their next 22. However, the Jays shot 50% (17-34) inside the arc.
The Jets jumped out to a 16-12 first quarter lead and went into the locker room up 28-20 by ending the half on an 8-0 run.
Guthrie had an opportunity to tie the game with less then 20 seconds, but a turnover stop the possession and Guthrie was forced to foul and the Lady Jets made both free throws to ice the game.
Njemile Miro led the way with 11 points, Alexis Daniels added 10 points, and Allyson Chadd finished with 9 points.
Guthrie (4-14) travels to El Reno, Tuesday, before returning home and hosting Carl Albert Thursday.
The Lady Jays will play Noble for Super Saturday, at Deer Creek High School, with a 4:00 start.
