Harrah warms up gym

By: Chris Evans

It appeared that Lady Jays head coach Terry Carris was going to celebrate a birthday and a win by the way the first quarter played out, but Carris and the Lady Jays fell to the 5th ranked Harrah Panthers. Even so, the Lady Jays had their cake too.

Guthrie jumped out to an 11-8 first quarter lead, but that is when Harrah started heating up and would take down Guthrie 60-39 in the first home game of the season. The Lady Panthers shot 40% in each half on 10 of 25 shooting while Guthrie could just manage 28% on 14 of 40 shooting in the contest. Harrah challenged the Lady Jays all night from the outside by playing a sagging 2-3 zone defense for majority of the night.

Harrah (6-1) matched the Oklahoma winter night by starting out cold from beyond the arc by starting out 0 of 7, but quickly warmed up the Guthrie High gymnasium by making seven of their next 17 three point shots to pull away from Guthrie. Harrah scored 26 second quarter points while holding the Jays to 11-points to take a 34-22 halftime lead.

Harrah then opened up their biggest lead (20-points) midway through the third quarter by going up 47-27. However, Guthrie would get back within 12 with an 8-0 run with a bucket from Alexis Daniels, two baskets from Jessica Peacock, and two free throws from Allyson Chadd, but Harrah would then go on and finish the game by outscoring Guthrie 13-4 in the games final 6:22.

Peacock was awarded the A-Always Storage Player of the Game by finishing with 13 points on six of 13 shooting. Daniels led the Lady Jays with 14 points while Eryn Donnely finished with 6, Njemile Miro added 4, and Chadd finished with 2.

Carris was pleased with the teams effort against a very good Harrah team and said the free throws as a team (10-12) was definitely a positive outcome.

Guthrie (1-4) will travel to Deer Creek and take on the Lady Antlers with a 6:30 tip time.
