Senior Emily Davis might not of won Homecoming queen, but she stole the show, Friday night, in front of a near capacity crowd inside Guthrie High School gymnasium by scoring 29 points in a win over Western Heights.
Davis was outscored by her teammates by two points, 31-29, but the two components added together easily downed the Lady Jets 60-42. The Lady Jays improved to 5-2 on the season and got back in the win column after dropping Tuesday's game with Stillwater.
Both teams would play evenly in the first quarter with Guthrie holding a slim advantage with a 11-10 lead. Davis scored nine of the 11 Lady Jays first quarter points.
The second quarter would begin the run that would help put Guthrie in the win column by outscoring Western Heights 20-10 in the quarter. This time Davis would counter with nine points in the quarter.
Guthrie would go on a 13-2 run in the quarters first 4:58 capped off nicely with a Davis lay-up that was set up by a Britney Berryman assist. At the half, Guthrie had three scorers with Davis' 20 points, Jessica Dwyer nine, and sister Tory Dwyer had two points.
Davis, in the third quarter, hit a field goal at the 2:47 mark to give Guthrie their biggest lead of the night at 25 points, 48-23 as well as capping off a 17-5 run out of the locker room. Davis finished the quarter with nine points along with a bucket in the fourth.
Jessica Dwyer finished the game with 11 points and Bianca Smith also finished in double figures with 10 points. Tory Dwyer added eight points and Ashley Womcack came off the bench with two points in the fourth quarter.
Western Heights guard Dylan Webster had a nice performance in the loss with a team high 19 points. The Lady Jets shot 42% from the line (6-14) while Guthrie shot 67% from the charity stripe by going 6-9.
The 14th ranked Lady Jays will hit the road Tuesday evening as they travel to El Reno. The Lady Indians ranked 8th in Class 5A and defeated Guthrie 43-34 in the finals of the Duncan Tournament back on December 8th.
Tip time is set for 6:30 and the game can be heard on Triple Play Sports, 105.1 FM, with the pre-game show starting at 6:00 p.m. Chris Evans, Casey Porter, Chris LeGrande, and Shawn Ingle will have the call of the game.
