The Stillwater Lady Pioneers had a lot on their mind when they entered the Guthrie High School gymnasium, Tuesday night. Coming into the game with an 0-6 record and one of those loses to the Lady Jays back in December.
Guthrie would jump out to a 4-0 lead in the games first two minutes, but Sarah Elliott’s bucket at the 4:32 mark would give her team a 6-4 advantage and a lead for the remainder of the game.
Stillwater would receive 10 points from Elliott in the quarter alone as Stillwater got the win 47-32. Elliott finished the game with 13 points.
Guthrie now stands at 4-2 on the year and Stillwater improves to 1-6.
Stillwater would take advantage down low in the paint with Elliott and Katie Norris. Norris finished with a game high 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Seniors Emily Davis and Jessica Dwyer gave Guthrie a 4-0 advantage before a 16-4 Pioneer run to make it a 16-8 game at the end of the first period. Davis finished with 14 points which matches her season average while Dwyer finished with eight points.
The second quarter would not prove to be any better for the Lady Jays with Stillwater holding Guthrie to just six second quarter points. Stillwater would go in the locker room on top 28-14.
Much like in the Piedmont game, Guthrie was not able to stop the other team from second and third chances with offensive rebounds. Stillwater was also able to get to the free throw line more often despite shooting 9-25 from the charity stripe. Guthrie finished 4-9 from the line.
In Friday’s game with Piedmont, the Lady Jays trailed at the half as well and would go on to come back and get the win, but Tuesday night was not the case.
Guthrie would not be able to pull within single digits in the entire second half despite out scoring the Pioneers 10-7 in the third quarter. The closest Guthrie could get was 10 of Stillwater when Davis’ jump shot made it 34-24.
Stillwater's junior Jasmine Smith was held to just 10 points, but had a game high five steals. In the last game between these two teams Smith had 18 points.
In the fourth quarter, Stillwater would continue to outscore Guthrie by a margin of 12-8.
The Lady Jays finished the game with 16 turnovers and shot just 29% from the field on 11 of 38 shooting, including 1 of 7 in the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, Stillwater shot 51% from the field by making 19 of 37 shots. The Lady Pioneers entered the game averaging close to 35% from the field.
The Lady Jays will now move their attention to conference play Friday night as they open up the Suburban Conference when Western Heights comes to town for Guthrie’s Homecoming.
