The script was well written for the Guthrie Lady Jays and their seniors, on Friday night, with a 57-41 victory over Shawnee.
The win improved Guthrie to 11-10 to end the regular season and gave seniors Emily Davis, Jessica Dwyer, Katreena Parker, and Bianca Smith one last home victory on Senior Night.
Davis finished the game with 14 points including 10 points from the stripe to go with her team high 15 rebounds. Dwyer added 13 points while Parker, on her first start of the season, ended with 5 points. Smith recently had surgery to repair her torn ACL that she suffered in the Harrah game.
Freshmen Tory Dwyer also shared part of the spotlight by joining Davis with a double double by scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Shawnee would break a 5-all score with a 7-0 run over a 68 second period of time in the opening quarter and would take a 14-11 advantage going into the second quarter, and that is where Guthrie would take over the game.
Guthrie would outscore Shawnee 13-3 in the second quarter. Shawnee shot 21% from the field on 6 of 28 shooting. Guthrie was not a whole lot better by shooting 29% at the break, but were 10-12 from the free throw line and took a 7 point lead into the locker room, 24-17.
The Lady Jays would open the third quarter with a 6-0 run in the first four minutes of the quarter to build up a 30-17 advantage and would go into the fourth quarter leading 36-25.
Both teams would pile on the points in the fourth quarter with Guthrie scoring 21 and Shawnee added 16 points in the final frame. The Lady Jays would score the games final 7 points and would execute 15 of 17 free throws in the quarter alone. Overall, the Lady Jays shot 36 free throws and made 29 for a whopping 81%. In fact, over half of Guthrie's points came from the charity line.
Guthrie ends the regular portion of the season with a two game winning streak with wins over Noble and Shawnee and now must move their attention to the El Reno regional on Thursday night and Saturday afternoon.
Guthrie plays the Lady Demons of Duncan High School on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in a must win game for the season to continue on another week. A win over Duncan would set up a game with either El Reno or Western Heights and would be play on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 for the Regional championship.
A loss on Thursday would end the season, but a win would extend the season another week by advancing to the Area Tournament win or lose on Saturday.
