Third time not the charm for Lady Jays

By; Chris Evans

It's common to hear the phrase "it's difficult to beat a team three times in one season," but that would not be the case at Guthrie High School Tuesday night.

El Reno Lady Indians defeated Guthrie the first time, on December 8th, in the Duncan Tournament 43-34, then again on January 15th, 53-45, in El Reno, and now the third time Tuesday night with a convincing 46-26 win.

Guthrie now drops to 9-8 overall and El Reno improves to 14-4. With the win, El Reno is the North Division champion of the Suburban Conference and will play Carl Albert for the conference title this Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Lady Jays finish second in the North and will play Harrah at 5:15 inside Carl Albert High School for third and fourth place in the conference.

Guthrie and El Reno very well could meet again for the fourth time if they both should win their first game of regionals that will be played in El Reno in two weeks. El Reno will play Western Heights while Guthrie takes on Duncan.

In the latest game between the two schools it was domination for the Lady Indians. Guthrie would score just two points in the first quarter, but El Reno was not much better by scoring six points.

Second quarter was not much better for either team, but El Reno would add 10 points to their total, but Guthrie could manage just three more points and El Reno had a 16-5 half time lead.

Head coach Terry Carris said senior guard Emily Davis probably should not have been playing in the game, but said the senior wanted to give a go. It was obvious Davis was no where near 100%, but gave a valiant effort.

El Reno chipped in 15 points in the third quarter and fourth quarter, but Guthrie was able to score just 21 points in the second half.

Guthrie will travel to Carl Albert to take on the second ranked Titans for a 6:30 contest that can be heard on Triple Play Sports 105.1 FM with the pre-game starting at 6:00
