Lady Jays to play in tournament finals

By: Chris Evans

The Guthrie Lady Jays basketball squad drew the host team in the second round of the Duncan Tournament and the ladies from Guthrie proved to be unkind guests.

Guthrie (2-0) would start the opening quarter a bit sluggish as they did in their first game, but again would overcome the slow start to defeat the Lady Demons, of Duncan, 52-38 to advance to play in the championship game Saturday night.

In Thursday's season opening game, Guthrie trailed 15-4 at the end of period one and despite another slow start the next night, the 'Jays still managed to be tied at the end of the quarter 9-9.

Duncan would outscore Guthrie 15-8, in the second quarter, to take a 24-18 half time lead.

"We came out flat again," assistant Guthrie coach James Gilbertson said.

The second half would be a half of the Lady Jays by outscoring Duncan 11-5 in the third quarter and then blew the game wide open in the fourth quarter with a 23-9 advantage.

Senior Jessica Dwyer led the way on the scoreboard with 15 points while fellow senior Emily Davis added 13. Torey Dwyer, Jessica's sister, added 11 points to round out the double digit scorers for Guthrie.

Davis, in the first two games of the season, is averaging 20 points so far in the young season for the Lady Jays, who enter the season ranked No. 20 in Class 5A.

"We shot poor from the free throw line in the first half," a puzzled Gilbertson said.

The Duncan Tournament championship will be a Suburban Conference showdown between Guthrie and El Reno.

El Reno, preseason ranked No. 11, defeated Lawton Mac, preseason ranked No. 14, to land in the finals tonight for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
