Willis Reed would have been proud.
With 5:33 left in the third quarter the Guthrie High School gymnasium held their breath when senior Emily Davis went down to the floor in pain and holding her left knee. Davis would need help off the floor and appeared to be done not only for the game, but the season.
However, Davis checked back in the game at the 7:46 mark in the fourth quarter and it's a good thing she did. Davis would score 15 of Guthrie's 17 points in a come from behind victory over Deer Creek 43-40. Davis finished with a game high 23 points.
The Lady Jays have now won three games in a row after dropping three games in the Deer Creek tournament including to the Lady Antlers the previous Saturday. The Lady Antler lead would rise to as high as six points, 36-30, with 4:13 to play in the game. Guthrie would regain the lead on an old fashion three point play from Davis to give Guthrie the lead for good 39-38.
Deer Creek would go 7-8 from the free throw line and none bigger from senior Courtney Cooke to tie the game at 40-all with 1:08 to play. Deer Creek would then foul Davis to send her to the line with :35.8 left.
Davis would make the first free throw, but would miss the next one and the Lady Antlers quickly called a time out to setup a last play.
Out of the time out Deer Creek would lose control of the ball and a mad scramble broke out. Freshmen forward Tory Dwyer not only was heads up to get the loose ball, but to call a time out to give Guthrie possession of the basketball with 13.2 seconds.
Deer Creek was forced to foul Davis immediately on the inbound pass and she would go to the line and make both free throws to secure the win. Guthrie finished the night by making 11 of 14 free throws.
