Lady Jays get prized win over Antlers

By: Chris Evans

The Guthrie Lady Jays had plenty of reasons to come out strong against Deer Creek on Tuesday night, and come out strong is what Guthrie did.

Guthrie, needing a conference win to stay in contention, was trying to end a two game losing streak, and was getting set for a busy week of basketball.

The Lady Jays would hold Deer Creek to just one shot in both the first and second quarter and would be in complete control the entire night in their 51-28 blow out victory over the Lady Antlers.

Guthrie jumped out to an 8-0 run in the first 3 minutes of the game. Deer Creek would get a trey from senior Trisha Shanbour at the 3:23 mark and would not score again until 4:40 was left in the second quarter.

In the meantime, the Lady Jays had runs of 11-0 and 6-0 to go to the half leading 25-5. Guthrie was led in almost every category on the night by senior guard Emily Davis.

Perhaps her finest performance of the season, Davis would nearly have a triple double on the evening and was close to that in the first half alone.

Davis had 12 points, six rebounds, and six steals in the games first 16 minutes. She would finish the night with 19 points, eight rebounds, seven steals, and five assists in a limited role in the second half as the Lady Jays backed off a touch, as far as aggression, with the commanding lead.

Davis, however, would injure her knee at the 5:27 mark and was visibly shaken up, but returned to the line-up although not at 100%. By the end of the night, Davis would finish with 7 of 10 shooting from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line.

As well as Davis played, Deer Creek was just the opposite. The Lady Antlers shot 13% in the first half on 2-15 shooting and would finish the game shooting 24% by finishing 10-41 from the field.

Freshmen Tory Dywer got her first start as a Lady Jay, due to the knee injury of senior Bianca Smith, and took advantage with 13 points and shot 63% from the field while shooting a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line.

As a team, Guthrie shot 53% on the entire night and improved their record to 6-4 overall and 3-2 in conference play including a 3-1 North record. Deer Creek has now dropped three of their last six games and drops to 5-8 on the year.

Guthrie returns back to Deer Creek High School Thursday, Friday, and Saturday for the Bruce Gray Invitational. The Lady Jays will open the tourney with Bishop McGuinness at 10am, and will face the winner/loser of the Star Spencer/Northeast game. The other side of the bracket will showcase Harrah who takes on Putnam City West and Deer Creek who plays Edmond Santa Fe.
