Lady Jays in Deer Creek Tourney Blog

By: Chris Evans

Saturday

For the second time this week the Guthrie Lady Jays faced the Deer Creek Lady Antlers and played their fourth game in five days inside Deer Creek High School. The fourth game on the fifth day for Guthrie saw the Lady Jays drop a 45-43 game to the Lady Antlers.

Guthrie drops their season record to 6-7 after dropping all three games in the Bruce Gray Invitational. In the final game against DC, Guthrie's senior Emily Davis three point game winning shot fell short at the buzzer.

Davis finished with a game high 18 points and was named to the All-Tournament team. Senior Jessica Dwyer added 14 points in the loss. Outside of the senior duo, Guthrie could only manage 11 points from the team.

At the midway point Guthrie trailed 25-23, and would be outscored 10-6 in the third quarter. Deer Creek's biggest lead with 2:39 to play in the third quarter was 35-27, but Guthrie erased that with a Davis turn around jump shot, while being tripled team, to tie the game 37-all with 5:50 remaining in the contest.

Both teams would score hoops in the next 1:50 to continue the tie, but DC would make 6 of 7 free throws down the stretch. The final miss set up the final shot attempt by Davis.

The Lady Jays will gladly return home, Tuesday night, when they take on Piedmont. Guthrie has played 13 games and just two of them have been inside the GHS gymnasium including their last six games

Guthrie defeated Piedmont January 4th, 40-34, at Piedmont after trailing by nine at the half.

Friday

The second round did not prove to be any better for the 15th ranked Guthrie Lady Jays in the Bruce Gray Invitational, at Deer Creek High School, after dropping a 49-38 contest to Northeast Friday morning.

Guthrie now plays in the seventh place game and will wait to play the loser of the Putnam City West and Deer Creek game. That game time is set for 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning. All three of Guthrie's games in the tourney will have been played at 10 a.m.

Guthrie pulled within a point at the end of the third quarter, 33-32, after trailing 26-19 at the half.

The Lady Jays now fall to 6-6 on the season heading into the final round of the tournament. Perhaps an interesting note on the Lady Jays this season, Guthrie averages 52 points in wins and just 34.66 points in loses. In all 12 games thus far, the Lady Jays average 43.25 points a game.

Thursday

The Guthrie Lady Jays dropped their first game of the Bruce Gray Tournament at Deer Creek to the Lady Irish of McGuinness 62-30.

Guthrie will play Northeast 10:00 a.m. Friday. Northeast dropped their opening round game to Star Spencer 59-30.

In the loss, Ashley Womack, Emily Davis, and Njemile Miro each had six points. Guthrie drops to 6-5 on the season while McGuinness improves to 10-6.

McGuiness jumped out to a 9-4 first quarter lead, but would separate themselves from the Lady Jays by outscoring Guthrie 17-3 and had a 26-7 halftime lead.

While the Lady Jays were able to score 10 third quarter points and 13 fourth points it would not be enough to stop t
