Jays race to Guthrie history books

The BlueJay track and field team earned their first ever state championship

The 2009 Guthrie BlueJay track team won their first ever track and field state championship at Moore Stadium, in Moore Ok.

The state championship also represents the third time in Guthrie history that two sports have won state championships in the same school year (boys basketball and boys track).

The boys cross country and golf teams were the first to ever do in the 1991-1992 school year.

Last year (07-08) the football and boys basketball teams accomplished the feat.

In 1997, baseball and boys cross country each won academic state championships.

Guthrie literally ran away with the title with a team score of 114 points. Next in line was the Shawnee Wolves at 76 overall points.

"This was an overall team effort and I could not be more pleased with this group of kids," Coach Gary Boxley said.

Emmanuel Robinson took gold in the 110 hurdles while teammate Tel Junghannas finished .08 behind for second place.

Junghannas also finished second in the 300 meter hurdles.

Donte' Foster, who has now won 8 titles in his high school career (including one AAU championship), was the other Jay to finish on top of his event when he won the high jump for the third consecutive year.

Foster also finished eight in the long jump with a leap of 20-06.75.

Laron Parker finished second in the 100 meter dash behind Carl Albert's stand-out Daytawion Lowe.

Boxley said a slow start may have prevented Parker from possibly getting the win. Robinson finished third behind Parker.

Timothy Eads finished just outside of third place by .03 to finish fourth in the 800 meter run.

The Ogan twins finished fourth and seventh in the 1600 meter run. Jason finished with a time of 4:49.01 and earned four points for the Jays while Jared ran a 4:51.83.

Jared Ogan fell 13 seconds behind Southeast's Enrique Benitez to finish second in the 3200 meter run. Guthrie's Zack Cates finished third and Hunter Sallee finished fifth. Guthrie earned 16 of the total 30 points to be earned in the 3200 run.

As a team, Guthrie won the 4x100 meter relay to earn 20 points and finished fourth in the 4x400 race to collect eight points.

Lady Jays finish seventh in 5A

The Lady Jays where within striking distance of the last day of the 5A State Track and Field Championship, but could manage to just move up one spot.

Shawnee earned the 5A state title with a score of 97. Ardmore was second with a score of 65.

Guthrie gained a total of 34 points.

Cross country and track stand-out Rachel Roberts earned 20 points alone.

Roberts finished in second place in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs while taking a fourth place finish in the 800 meter.

Alexis Daniels and Leslie Hughes each gained three points in the high jump competition with jumps of five feet each.

Senior Jessica Peacock, who will attend Redlands next year, took home the silver in the discus throw to earn eight points.
