Lady Jays win title, Jays improving

The 2009 Guthrie Tennis season has started and the Lady Jays and BlueJays are off to quick seasons for head coach Mary Hudson, including a team win for the Lady Jays in the Deer Creek Tournament.

 

In just their second tournament of the season, the Guthrie Lady Jays came away with the team title in the Deer Creek Tennis Tournament, on March 9th.

 

Leading the way for Guthrie was Brittney Berryman, Paige Powell, and Brooke Powell.

 

Brooke beat Bailey Parduhn, from OCS, 6-2, 6-0 and in the semi’s defeated Marissa Conway, from Deer Creek, 6-3, 6-4.  In the finals, she beat Hailey Angel, from Chickasha, 6-1, 6-2 to win the No. 2 singles division.

 

The Guthrie doubles team provided a boost in the team win, including the No. 1 doubles team of Janie Nolen and Kailyn Wade. Nolen and Wade won their division by defeating Lewis and Divilbiss, of OCS, 6-0, 6-1 in the second round after receiving a first round bye. In the finals, they defeated Brown and Dalton, from McGuinness, 6-2, 6-3.

 

The returning duo of Berryman and Paige Powell did not take long to gather their first No. 2 doubles win this season. After a first round bye they defeated Angier and Litterell, from Deer Creek, 6-3, 6-0 and in the finals defeated Brown and Coffey, from McGuinness.

 

Megan Hickman placed 7th at No. 1 singles for Guthrie.

 

In the first tournament of the season, Guthrie competed in the Carl Albert Tennis Tournament and landed both doubles teams in the finals with both finishing second place. The No. 1 team of Nolen and Wade defeated Mustang and Carl Albert before dropping to Shawnee in the finals.

 

Shawnee also won the No. 2 doubles with a win over Brooke and Paige Powell.

 

In singles action, Berryman placed 5th and won consolation at No. 1 singles.  Berryman lost to Morgan Murphey, from Carl Albert, in the first round and then defeated her next two opponents to win consolation.

 

Guthrie BlueJay Tennis

 

Just like the Lady Jays, the BlueJays open their season at the Carl Albert Tennis Tournament on the day before the ladies.

 

Josh Wehrenberg placed third in No. 1 singles by defeating Harrah in the first round 6-4, 7-5.  In the second round, he lost to Cody Ngyen, from Mustang, 6-0, 6-2. and then defeated Logan Hilldenbrand, from Shawnee, in a hard fought three set match.

 

Barrett Porter placed seventh in  No. 2 singles. Porter lost to Altus and Carl Albert in the first two rounds, but rallied to beat Ryan Love, from Midwest City, in his final match of the afternoon.

In doubles action, Daniel Breedlove and Hank Hudson placed second  in  No. 1 Doubles losing to Carl Albert in the finals. They defeated Altus and Shawnee in the first and second round.

 

Julius Gamboa and Dylan Williams placed sixth in No. 2 doubles.  They lost to Shawnee  in the first round, then beat Midwest City and then lost to Carl Albert.

 

Just five days later, the Jays were back on the court for the Deer Creek Tennis Tournament.

 

Breedlove and Hudson placed third in  No. 1 doubles by beating Oklahoma Bible 6-0, 6-1, but in the semis lost to Bell and Stewart, from OCS, 6-1, 6-4.  In the playback round, Guthrie responded by defeating Messsick and Umali from McGuinness 6-0, 6-2.  In the final match, the duo defeated Hayes and Pilcher, from Deer Creek, 6-1, 6-3.

 

Barrett Porter placed fifth in the No. 2 singles division by losing his first match to Branden Parduhn, from OCS, 6-2, 6-0, but in the next round defeated Caleb Rich, from Harrah, 6-2, 6-0.  In the third round, Porter dropped his match to Dylan Myers, from Chickasha, 6-1, 7-5 and in the consolation match defeated Luke Thomas, from Oklahoma Bible, in three sets.

 

Both squad will be in action Friday, March 13th, when they compete in the Guthrie Spring Fling at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
