Duncan 16 Team Tennis Tournament

In one of the toughest tournaments this season for the Guthrie tennis teams, Hudson had high remarks for the Duncan Tournament.

"This tournament is one of the toughest tournaments in the state.  The top 6A schools are there, plus some tough schools from our 5A class. I was really proud of both #1 doubles teams as they competed really hard in this tournament," Hudson concluded.

The Duncan girls took home the championship while Jenks placed second, Carl Albert third, Edmond Memorial placed fourth, and Guthrie placing fifth.

Janie Nolen and Kaitlyn Wade placed fourth. They played Norman North in the first round and won 6-4, 6-0.  In the next round they defeated Carl Albert in a close match 7-5, 7-6. They played the one seed in the next round, Duncan, and lost 6-1, 6-1. In the third place match they played Enid and lost 7-6, 6-2.

At #2 Singles Paige Powell placed 12th. She lost a close three setter to Ada in the first round and had a bye in the second round.  She lost her third round to Seminole and last her last round to Lawton MacArthur in three sets.

The BlueJays No. 1 doubles placed seventh. Hank Hudson and Daniel Breedlove came from behind 2-5 in the first set to beat Duncan 7-5, 6-4.  They then had to play the top team in the state Norman North 6-2, 6-1.

"They played them as well as anyone as Jenks only got one more game off of them," Mary Hudson said.

In the third round they played Enid, another top ranked team in 6A.  The duo played very well against them winning the first set in a tie-breaker and then dropping the next two sets.

"They were pretty tired after that match, but they regrouped and played Carl Albert for the seventh place match. This is the team they have struggled with all year. Their first win against them was at the Altus tournament and at Duncan they beat Carl Albert 6-2, 6-1," Mary Hudson concluded.

In No. 2 singles action, Barrett Porter placed 10th. He lost his first round to Enid and then won his next two rounds against Lawton MacArthur and Duncan.  In the consolation finals he was defeated by Ardmore 6-2, 6-4.

"I was down several players due to conflicts and injuries and hope to have them all back for the Heritage Hall Tournament on Friday," Mary Hudson said.

Guthrie travels to Heritage Hall this Thursday and Friday and the girls have regionals and state next week at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
