The Guthrie Lady Jays tennis team
went through the first day of the 5A State Tournament with some ups and downs.
Janie Nolen and Kaitlyn Wade playing
in No. 2 doubles got a first round victory over the team of Kayla
Hatch and Trissa Dodson, of Lawton Mac, in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.
The Guthrie duo, however, were then
paired paired up with Katelyn Connelly and Emily Conrad of McGuinness. The Irish
duo have won the last two state championships and are heavy favorites to do the
same this year. The Irish
won the match 6-1, 6-0.
McGuinness is a big favorite to win the
team title in 5A. The Irish played in eight matches and lost just two games all
day.
In No.2 doubles action, Brooke Powell
and Paige Powell saw a familiar team in the Shawnee Wolves and were taken down
in two sets 6-3, 6-5. The Lady Jay duo came back to get the first win with a
6-3,6-2 win over Grove.
Senior Brittany Berryman was the only
singles player for Guthrie to qualify for singles action, but had a tough day by
going for 0-2.
In her first match of the day,
Berryman was dropped by scores of 6-2, 6-0 by Laura Fillmore of Tahlequah
and Altus' Nichole Stange, 6-1, 6-3.

Tennis State Tournament
Day 2 @ Oklahoma City Tennis
Center
The Guthrie Lady Jays doubles teams returned back to the State
Tournament on Friday, but were both defeated in their matches.
In the No. 1 doubles department, Ada's Erica Poe and Madison Whitworth
took down Janie Nolen and Kaitlyn Wade in a tough three set battle (4-6,
6-1, 6-4) to win the consolation bracket. Nolen and Wade placed sixth
overall.
"This was the fourth time they had to play Carl Albert this year and it
was the fourth time we won," head coach Mary Hudson said. "It has always
been a difficult match. I was
really proud of the effort these two gave this year.
In No. 2 doubles action, it was another Guthrie-Carl Albert battle with
Guthrie's Brooke Powell and Paige Powell losing in yet another three set
classic.
The Titans took the first set 7-5, but Guthrie rallied to win the next
set 6-4 to send it to a final and decisive set. However, the Titans went
on to win 6-1.
"They had a great year and I look forward to having them back next
year," Hudson said of the Powell partners.
To no surprise Bishop McGuinness won the 5A state title by 10 points
over Tulsa Kelley. Both private schools were expected to be near the the
top at the beginning of the tennis season.
The BlueJays tennis team will now get set for their shot at State. The
Tournament begins Friday at Oklahoma City Tennis Center and wraps up on
Saturday. |
