Day 1: 5A State Tournament

The Guthrie boys tennis team hit the Oklahoma City Tennis Center with some confidence after having some success at the same facility last week in regional action and had some more on the first day of the 5A Tennis State Championship.

The No.1 doubles team of Hank Hudson and Daniel Breedlove made quick work of Bixby's Cameron Hudson and Nick Gangas by winning 6-1, 6-1.

The Guthrie duo continued the good play in the second round winners bracket where they were matched up with Ada's Chase Sheffield and Brandon Russell.

Hudson-Breedlove took the first set 6-1, but dropped a back and forth second set 6-4 before losing the third and decisive set 6-1.

In No. 2 doubles action, Guthrie's William Bohanan and Josh Wehrenberg took a similar approach with their teammates with a first round win and a second round loss.

However, Bohanan and Wehrenberg had to come from behind in the first match with McAlester's Brenden Denike and John Harrison. The Buffalo duo opened up with a 2-6 first set win, but the Jays rallied to win the next to sets 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the second round winner's bracket.

Guthrie drew Tulsa Washington's Chase Stubblefield and Patrick Turner in the second round and dropped both sets 6-1, 6-2.

Both doubles team will resume action on Saturday afternoon in hopes of a high finish in the 5A State Tournament.

Day 2: 5A State Tournament

The Guthrie boys doubles' tennis teams each won the consolation bracket of the Class 5A State Tennis tournament, but the teams went a different way to achieve their spot.

The senior duo of Hank Hudson and Daniel Breedlove cruised in their consolation victories including a 6-2, 6-1 final win over the 3 seeded team of Amar Chandra-Kenton McGalliard, of Shawnee, in No. 1 doubles action.

Meanwhile, William Bohanan and Josh Wehrenberg accomplished the same in No. 2 doubles, but had to go extra set to pull off their final win.

Hudson and Breedlove took down Victor Acosta and Ethan Ferguson, of Durant, 6-1, 6-4 in the first match before taking down Burns and Brenner, of McAlester, 6-2, 6-3.

"I was really proud of how these two played on Saturday after the disappointing loss to Ada and having Carl Albert advance after playing Shawnee," head coach Mary Hudson said.

Bohanan and Wehrenberg, who were the seven seeded team, had an exhausting three set match with fellow rivals of Matt Franks and Ryan Mullins, of Carl Albert, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6.

The BlueJay duo got wins over Durant (6-3, 6-4) and Lawton MacArthur (7-5, 6-0) to reach the finals.

"I never expected them to win all their matched to medal on Saturday, but they did," Mary Hudson said. "We had played them (Carl Albert) three times this year and lost every time. We took them three sets and final won in a third set tie-breaker," Mary Hudson concluded.

Overall, Mary Hudson's BlueJays finished seventh as a team with Bishop Kelley edging out fellow private school Bishop McGuinness by 13-points.

Bishop Kelley has won the last three state championships in their class.
