Tennis squads continue to place

The Guthrie tennis teams competed in the First Capital Bank and Stillwater Tournaments and placed many in the Top 3.

 

Saturday, April 4th, Guthrie hosted the First Capital Bank Tournament at the Edmond Racquet Club.

 

In No. 1 singles Brittney Berryman placed fifth for the Lady Jays. She lost to Krysta Mitchell from Perry in three sets. Berryman won the first set 6-4, lost the second 2-6 and lost a super tie breaker for a third set. She had a bye for her second round and then defeated Tania Kanga from Stillwater 6-2, 6-3.

 

In other singles action, Megan Hickman, playing No.2 singles, placed seventh. She lost to Ashley Batchelder from Stillwater 6-1, 6-1, in the next round she lost to Nicole Sadler from Perry 6-3, 6-2. In her last round she defeated Taylar Swartzbaugh from Guthrie who was playing as an extra 6-2, 7-5.

 

No. 1 doubles team of Janie Nolen and Kaitlyn Wade placed second.  They beat Altus 6-3, 6-3 and then played Stillwater in the second round and beat them 6-1, 6-4.  In the finals they lost to Duncan 6-3, 6-2.

 

The No. 2 doubles team of Brooke Powell and Paige Powell placed second. The duo defeated Woodward 6-0, 6-0 and then beat Altus 6-3, 6-1.  In the finals they lost to Duncan 6-0, 6-0.

 

For the Guthrie BlueJays in No. 1 singles Dylan Williams placed 8th, No. 2 singles and Barrett Porter placed sixth.

 

Daniel Breedlove and Hank Hudson playing in the No.1 doubles placed third. They won the first round against Deer Creek 6-1, 6-2. In the second round they lost to Carl Albert in three sets. They won the first set 6-1, lost the second set 6-3 and then lost a super tie-breaker for a third set. They played Stillwater in their final round and won 6-2, 6-2.

 

                                   

Stillwater Tournament - April 6th

 

#1 Singles Brittney Berryman placed third. In the first round she defeated Tania Kanga from Stillwater 6-3, 6-1.  In the semi’s she lost to Brooke Gunter from Claremore 6-1, 6-0.  "Britney was the only player to get a game off of Gunter the whole day," head coach Mary Hudson said.

 

In her third place match she defeated Krysta Mitchell from Perry, who she had lost to at the previous Guthrie tournament. 

 

"They had long games and points, but Brittney played much better. She won the first set in a tie-breaker and won the second set 6-2," Hudson said.

 

No. 2 singles player Megan Hickman placed sixth. She lost to Bartlesville in the first round 7-6, 6-2.  In the next round she beat Chickasha 6-0, 6-2 and for consolation she lost to Perry 6-0, 6-4.

 

No. 1 doubles Janie Nolen and Kaitlyn Wade placed second. They beat Chickasha in the first round, split set with Claremore and beat them to advance to the finals and then lost to Bartlesville in the finals 6-2, 6-2.

 

In No. 2 doubles Brooke Powell and Paige Powell placed also finished second. They took down Bartlesville 6-3, 6-0.  In the next round they defeated Owasso in three sets, but lost their last match with the first set going 6-4, won the second set 6-2 and then won a super tie-breaker for a third set.

 

No. 1 singles Dylan Williams placed fifth. Williams lost to Claremore 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.  In the second round he beat Perry in three sets and then went on the win the consolation round.

 

No. 2 singles Barrett Porter also placed fifth. He lost his first round to Claremore 6-3, 6-3.  He won the second round against Stillwater 6-2, 6-2.  For consolation he defeated Owasso 6-2, 6-3.

 

No. 1 doubles Daniel Breedlove and Hank Hudson placed second. The duo won this tournament a season ago.

 

This year they beat a Stillwater JV team in the first round 6-3, 6-2.  In the second round they defeated Stillwater’s varisty team in three sets. Then lost the first set 6-3, won the second set in a tie-breaker and then won the third set by a super tie-breaker. They lost to Claremore in the finals by losing their first set 6-0 and lost the second set in a tie-breaker.

 

In No. 2 doubles, William Bohanan and Josh Wehrenberg placed fourth. They won their first round against a Stillwater JV team 6-0, 6-4.  In the next round they lost to Claremore in three sets.  Guthrie won the first set 6-2, then lost the second set 6-3 and then lost the super tie-breaker for a third set. the duo played Owasso for the third place match and lost it in three sets. They lost the first set 6-2, then we won the second set 6-1 and then lost the super tie-breaker for a third set.

 

"This was Bohanan and Wehrenberg’s first tournament to play since William just got out of basketball.  I look for them to be more competitive each week," Hudson said about her No. 2 doubles team.

 

Guthrie returns back to the court April 10th when they host the 89'er Tournament at Oklahoma City Tennis Center.
