The Guthrie Lady Jay tennis team placed 5th overall in the Duncan Tournament in a tough, 16 team, competitive field according to head coach Mary Hudson.
The tournament hosted teams in 5A, in which, Guthrie competes on the 4A level.
"I was very proud of their performance as this is the most difficult tournament we go to, due to the fact that the top 5A schools are always invited. We competed really hard with No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles placing fifth," Hudson said.
No. 1 singles player, Kaitlyn Wade placed 6th. She won her first match against Trinity Goombi, of Anadarko, 6-3, 6-1. She lost her next match to Cassie Carver of Putnam City North, who is the #1 player in the state, 6-1, 6-0.
"Kaitlyn played really well against her and I was proud of the long points and games she had against her," Hudson said.
In the next round, Wade beat Monica Mitchell, from Jenks, 6-4, 6-3. In Wade's final match, she would lose to Jordan Adams, of Ardmore, 6-1, 6-0.
No. 2 singles Brittney Berryman placed 5th. Berryman won her first match against Lauren Dinsmore, from Seminole, 6-4, 7-5. In her second match, she lost a tough 3 setter to Lexie Maytubby, of Anadarko, 6-4, 1-6, 1-6. Berryman would then defeat Hunter Conover, of Carl Albert, 6-1, 6-1 and in her fifth place match she beat Allie Mauck, from Putnam City North, 6-3, 6-3.
Hudson was pleased with Berryman and her play, "I was very proud of Brittney’s performance she had some tough matches and came from behind in several of them to win."
No. 1 doubles saw Amy Hudson and Janie Nolen placed 5th. In their first match they defeated Pauls Valley 6-0, 6-0, but then lost to the No. 2 seeded Ada Cougars, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round. In the third round they defeated Carl Albert in three sets 1-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Hudson talked about the win over Carl Albert, "This was a huge win for them because they had lost to them earlier in the season.
In the final round, the Guthrie duo defeated Duncan 6-1, 6-3.
The No. 2 doubles team of Brooke Powell and Paige Powell made it to the finals of consolation and lost to Anadarko 6-3, 6-3.
Bluejays endure same tough field
Just as the Lady Jays did the previous day, the Bluejay tennis team saw the same tough field with competition from the state's largest class in Duncan.
William Bohanan and Josh Wehrenberg made it to the finals of consolation and lost to Edmond Memorial 6-2, 6-2 in No. 2 doubles while the No. 1 doubles team of Daniel Breedlove and Hank Hudson were the only team to move on to the winners side of the bracket.
The duo defeated Herr and Ramseyer, from Oklahoma Bible, in the 1st round 6-0, 6-1, but in the second round they were defeated by Norman North, the second best team in 5A, 6-0, 6-1. In the next round they lost in a three set battle to Duncan 4-6, 7-5, 0-6 before defeating Carl Albert for the second time in one week, in another three set match, 6-4, 2-6, 6-0 for 7th place.
In singles action, Michael Oates, at No. 1 singles placed 12th and Corey Cain, in No. 2 singles, placed 13th.
"This was an extremely difficult tournament because there are so many 5A schools such as Jenks, Norman North, Putnam City North, Enid and Edmond Memorial," Hudson said about the impressive field.
