Hudson and Breedlove place first in Stillwater Tournament

By: Chris Evans

The unseeded doubles team of Hank Hudson and Daniel Breedlove took down the field and captured a first place finish to help land the Bluejays a third place team finish and the Lady Jays also took third place in the Stillwater Tournament this week.

Hudson and Breedlove defeated Owasso 6-2 and 6-2 in the first round and in their second match with Mustang would drop their first set 4-6, but came back with a 6-4 second set win and in a super tie-breaker set came away with a 10-8 win. Head coach Mary Hudson had high praise for her No. 1 doubles team.

"This is the best I have seen these two play," Mary Hudson said.

In the finals, Hudson and Breedlove would make short work of the team from Claremore with 6-2 decision in straight sets to come away with the title.

In No. 2 doubles action, William Bohanan and Josh Wehrenberg finished with a fourth place finish. Their lone win came in the opening round with easy wins over Owasso 6-1 and 6-1, but would drop their next match with Stillwater in a super tie-breaker 11-9. Claremore would take the third place medal in another three set match and super tie-breaker.

In singles action, Michael Oates placed fourth in No. 1 singles as did Julius Gamboa in No. 2 singles.

Oates saw a familiar opponent in Heath Pratt from Chickasha in the first round. Pratt got the best of Oates in the Big West Tourney in Altus last week, but Oates got some revenge with 6-3 and 6-1 wins. In the second round Oates squared off with the No. 1 seed from Claremore and would drop straight sets 6-4, 6-1 and would eventually lose to Jonathan Hill of Stillwater with 6-3 decisions.

Gamboa won his first match against Josh James of Claremore with sets of 6-4, 4-6, and 10-5 before losing to Ryan Sherer of Stillwater in the second round and Kegan Zimmerman of Mustang in the third and final match.

The Lady Jays duo of Amy Hudson and Janie Nolen brought back another second place finish in No. 1 doubles. They would eventually lose in the finals to Barlesville 6-2, 6-2, but Mary Hudson says was pleased with their effort against a very good field.

"They had some awesome points and games. Many of their games would go to deuce, add –in and add-out several times, but they just could not pull out enough of their advantage points," Hudson said. "I was really pleased with their play. Janie Nolen especially had incredible net play and Bartlesville placed third last year at 5A state, so I knew it would be a tough match."

Guthrie's other doubles team of Brooke Powell and Paige Powell came back to Logan County as consolation champs in No. 2 doubles by taking down Stillwater 1-6, 6-1, and a 10-7 super tie-breaker decisive set.

Singles action for the Lady Jays saw Kaitlyn Wade finish in sixth place and Brittney Berryman finishing in third place on the No. 2 singles circuit.

According to coach Hudson, Wade had some close matches including a super tie-breaker set back to Marissa Lewis of Owasso in the first round and then again in the round with Amy Bynum of Mustang. Wade did get a second round win over Melissa Collins of Bartlesville 6-3 and 6-3.

Berryman would get two wins on the day including her final match over Kinzie Morris, of Owasso, with 6-4 decisions in straight sets. Berryman's only defeat came in the second round against the top seed.

The tennis teams will travel to Edmond and the Edmond Racquet Club, on Saturday, and host the First Capital Bank Tournament.
