The Guthrie Lady Jays hosted one of four tennis regionals at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center (OCTC), on Monday, and came away in second place tie with Carl Albert. Ada won three of the four brackets in the regional with a Lady Jay walking away with one of those titles.
The Ada Cougars won the regional with 34 points followed by Guthrie and Carl Albert with 26 points each. El Reno had a point total of 21 for fourth place. However, all the Lady Jays will be competing in the state tournament this weekend.
Leading the way for Guthrie was junior No. 2 singles player Brittney Berryman, who has won multiple tourneys this season, came away a regional winner in her bracket. Berryman defeated Laura Medcalf, of Ada, for the regional championship. Berryman got a first round bye and then defeated Hunter Conover from Carl Albert 6-1, 6-2
In other action, Kaitlyn Wade finished fourth behind the girls from Ada, El Reno, and Carl Albert. Wade defeated Jackie Chanchaleune 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, but in the second round was defeated by Maureen Lewis, of El Reno, 7-5, 6-0. In Wade's last round match, she was defeated by Morgan Murphy, of Carl Albert, 6-3, 6-2.
Amy Hudson and Janie Nolen finished in third place by defeating the team from Tulsa East Central in their final match in the No. 1 doubles bracket. The Ada team defeated Carl Albert for the regional title.
The duo defeated Tulsa East Central 6-1, 6-0 in the first round and in the second round they had another three set battle with Carl Albert and lost in three sets, 1-6, 7-6, 4-6. In their second match they defeated El Reno 6-0, 6-0, and in the 3rd place match they defeated Tulsa East Central, again, 6-1, 6-0.
The Lady Jays No. 2 doubles team and freshmen cousins, Brooke Powell and Paige Powell, brought home a third place finish when they took down the Northwest team. Again, Ada came away with the regional by defeating Carl Albert. The Powell's had a bye in the first round, but lost to Carl Albert 6-0, 6-3 in the second round and defeated NW Classen for 3rd place 6-0, 6-0.
Duncan, Tulsa Kelly, and Shawnee also won their respective regional on Monday.
The girls state tennis tournament will be this Friday and Saturday at OCTC (34th and Portland). Berryman, who is expected to seeded, will hit the court at 11am on Friday while the other Lady Jays around 12:30. The second match for the Lady Jays will be at 5:00. Head coach Mary Hudson believes that all the Lady Jays have a great chance of playing on Saturday if they play to their abilities on Friday.
