The Guthrie tennis teams held their own tournament in Edmond and came away with second and third place team finishes.
In the First Capital Bank Tournament, the Lady Jays came away with the second place plaque while the boys finished in third place.
In No. 1 singles, Kaitlyn Wade placed second. She defeated Lyndee Reese from Perry 6-3, 6-3. In the second round, she battled Nichole Stange of Altus and got the win 6-2, 7-6, but lost in the finals to Ariel Reyna of Deer Creek 6-1, 6-0.
Wade's fellow singles and No. 2 partner, Brittney Berryman, finished in third. She defeated Anyssa Williams of Altus 6-0, 6-2, but would lose her next match to Krysta Mitchell of Perry 6-2, 6-2. In her match for third place, she defeated Morgan Myers of Woodward 6-1, 6-3.
The No. 1 doubles team of Amy Hudson and Janie Nolen placed second. They defeated Barnett and Benbrook of Woodward 6-1, 6-2. In the second round they played a tough three-setter to Singmaster and Zimmer of Perry, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. In thier last match, Hudson and Nolen, came from behind in the second set but were not able to pull it out with drop sets of 6-2 and 7-6 to Lane and McLaurin of Carl Albert.
Brooke Powell and Paige Powell, playing in No. 2 doubles, defeated the No. 3 seed, Woodward, to advance on the right side of the bracket 6-3, 6-1. However, they would lose a close three set match to Perry in the second round 6-1, 5-7, 6-7 and Carl Albert 6-3, 6-1 in their final match.
Guthrie's No. 1 singles player, Michael Oates, placed third in the First Capital Bank Tournament in Edmond. Oates took down Hunter Dehne of Deer Creek 6-0, 6-0. In his next match he would lose to the No. 1 seed from Carl Albert 6-2, 6-2, but responded nicely in his third place match with a win over Jonathan Hill, of Stillwater, 7-6, 6-2.
Head coach Mary Hudson was pleased with the effort of Oates.
"Hill had beaten Oates last week in their tournament, so I was really proud of Michael to come back and beat him at our tournament. Michael continues to play well."
No. 2 singles Julius Gamboa won the consolation bracket. Gamboa lost to Cort Visnieshi of Harrah 6-0, 6-2. In his next round he defeated Dar Patel of Perry 6-0, 6-0. In Gamboa's final match he had a familiar opponent on the other side of the net in Dylan Williams.
Williams, who is from Guthrie, was playing for Woodward who did not have enough players.
The No. 1 doubles team of Daniel Breedlove and Hank Hudson placed third for the Jays. The duo beat Hill and Wilson of Altus 6-0, 6-4 and then lost to Grisham and Harrison of Carl Albert 6-3, 6-4. In their third place match they defeated Henderson and Raglin of Harrah 6-2, 6-4.
Will Bohanan and Josh Wehrenberg placed fourth place in No. 2 doubles. They beat Jones and Knight of Altus 6-1, 6-4. In the second round, they lost to Nord and Wedel of Stillwater 6-4, 6-1. In the match for third place they lost to Lansford and Rudek of Harrah in three sets. 7-6, 2-6, 7-5.
Guthrie will take on Oklahoma Christian at Kickingbird, on Tuesday, and McGuinness, on Thursday, in duels action this week. The duel with McGuinness will be at the Santa Fe Racquet Club.
