Guthrie Tennis opens season in Ardmore

By: Chris Evans

The 2008 Guthrie Tennis boys and girls teams opened their season this past weekend and week and look forward to the 2008 campaign.

The boys started the season on Saturday by placing 6th in the Ardmore Sweet Sixteen Tournament while the ladies traveled to Ardmore on Tuesday and finished 6th as well.

In the No.1 singles division, both Michael Oates and Kaitlyn Wade placed 6th.

The girls were originally scheduled to play on Monday, but according to head coach Mary Hudson Ardmore had to cancel and therefore one team was not able to make the trip which allowed the Guthrie junior varsity to travel.

In all, 14 Lady Jays got to travel and were highlighted by Paige Powell and Brooke Powell. The Powell's played in the junior varsity No.1 doubles division and dropped their opening match to Durant, but would go on and win their next three matches to capture the Consolation Championship.

The Powell duo will bump up to the varsity No. 2 doubles this weekend when the Lady Jays travel to Chickasha on Friday and Ada on Saturday. The Bluejays will travel to Chickasha on Saturday.
