The Guthrie Lady Jays softball team open the 2009 home season, Monday evening, but
the Piedmont Wildcats were not very gracious guests. In fact, they were down
right rude. However, that was not the main focus of the evening.
Piedmont scratched across 5-runs in the first inning en route to a 9-1 decision
at the windy softball complex. Guthrie falls to 2-5 on the season, but appears
they have lost a key member of the team.
In the second inning, senior centerfielder Charle King grabbed a base hit and on
the next pitch took off for second.
King came away with the steal, but also came away with an injured knee that
appears has ended her season on her slide attempt.
"We will know more tomorrow, but it does not look good," head coach Brian
Jackson said.
After the King injury, Madison Sutton drew a walk, but Guthrie left both runners
on in the second.
The Lady Jays, again, would put runners on base in the third, but left them stranded. The
inning was highlighted by junior Amber Coffman's single.
Piedmont was held in check and managed one run in the third, fifth, sixth, and
seventh against freshmen McKale Hopfer, who performed well despite what the
score may indicate.
"Things did not go our way," Jackson said. "They (Piedmont) can hit and put the
ball in play, but a play here or there and we don't give up five in the first. (McKale)
did not allow a lot of free passes."
Guthrie got on the scoreboard in the 5th when senior Kacey Acker got a 2-out
double that sailed over the centerfielder's head and moments later scored on a
RBI single from Macy Schneberger.
"The top of the line-up is doing most of the work, but when the bottom of our
line-up gets on, our top does not get it done," Jackson explained. "We just can
not complete an inning together."
Guthrie will be back in action, Tuesday night, when they host now 6A Shawnee at
the softball complex. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm.
