Lady Jays begin scrimmages

By: Chris Evans

With the 2008 softball season just days away, the Guthrie Lady Jays participated in their first two scrimmages of the season at Putnam City North.

In a three way scrimmage with PC North and Bethany, Guthrie dropped both of their games, but collected 14 hits in nine innings of play.

Madison Clymer and Kacey Acker each combined for three hits on the afternoon. Lady Jay shortstop Macey Schneeberger collected two hits in the first scrimmage with Bethany. The top four hitters in the line-up were a combined 7-12 with Acker picking up two RBI's.

Bethany outscored Guthrie 4-2 in the 5 inning scrimmage.

Acker took the loss as she pitched all five innings and gave up four runs on four hits with two runs being earned. Acker gave up four walks and struck out two. Guthrie's defense gave up three errors behind Acker.

Senior pitcher Jamie Poplin toed the rubber against the 6A Panther team, and the Guthrie defense was credited with six errors in a 6-2 loss. Poplin, who has been working through injuries, allowed just two earned runs and struck out five Lady Panther batters in the loss.

Guthrie out-hitted PC North with seven hits and allowed just three Panther hits. Guthrie got hits from Amber Coffman, Clymer, Acker, Sable Webb, Brooke Foster, Ali Fulton, and Erica Guerrero.

Guthrie will begin the season on August 12th when they travel and take on Shawnee to begin conference play. The Lady Jays will play 12 of their first 14 games on the road including six of those in tournament play.
