Berryman era begins in Guthrie with split decision

By: Chris Evans

The Shelley Berryman era has begun in Guthrie as the new head coach of the Guthrie softball program. Berryman and the Lady Jays got a split decision in their first outing in the Perry summer league.

After rain cancelled the first schedule games the Lady Jays got on the field and got their first win in their first outing.

Guthrie got an 11-4 win over Ponca City that saw the Lady Jays jump out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning. In the second game Tonkawa took down Guthrie 11-4.

In the first game, Ponca City scratched a run in the second inning and then held their own in the bottom of the inning to make it a 6-1 game. Ponca City would then hold Guthrie scoreless in the home half of the frame.

The Lady Wildcats would pull within two runs of Guthrie when Ponca City put a 3-run third inning together, but the Lady Jays responded with five runs of their own to end the three inning game.

Kacey Acker picked up the win by allowing just three hits on the day and received a nice fielding performance from her teammates as they committed no errors.

Guthrie 4, Tonkawa 11

Tonkawa would take a 4-0 lead in their first at bat, but Guthrie would respond with three runs of their own in the first inning, but Tonkawa would open the game up with six runs in the second inning.

The Lady Jays would scratch one more run in the third inning.

Acker got the loss and drops her record to 1-1 in the Perry summer league. Shelby Brewington came in relief and allowed four hits while striking out two Tonkawa batters.

Two games into the season Guthrie is batting .273 and have received hits from Sable Webb, Amber Coffman, Brewington, Acker, and Brooke Foster. Foster leads the team so far with two hits in three at bats.
