The Guthrie Lady Jay golf team has gotten a boost from some newcomers and with a veteran, head coach Mike Longstreth has been pleased what he has seen from his team and might be building up to a state tournament team come May.
"The addition of McCandren Lewis and Jasmine Linville, along with veteran Kacey Acker, has made the Lady Jays possible state qualifiers again this year," Longstreth said.
With five events already in the bag, Guthrie has placed in all five including two second place finishes in the Deer Creek Invitational and Ralph Wilson Memorial at Cushing Golf and Country Club.
Lewis, who is just a freshmen, placed fifth at Deer Creek (Rose Creek) and third at Cushing. As a team, Guthrie shot a team 379 which proved to be on the lowest scores in recent memory for the Lady Jay program.
Lewis also added a fourth place finish at the Chandler Invitation with the team finishing third in the event.
Longstreth had high remarks for another newcomer to the team, a freshmen, in Jasmine Linville.
"Jasmine Linville has shown the most improvement, lowering her scores by 20 strokes since the beginning of the season, "Longstreth said.
The anchor of the Lady Jays is 3-sport letterman Acker. Acker, a junior, won the Cedar Valley Executive Par 3 back on March 24th. Acker also placed third at Chandler, second at Deer Creek, and fourth at Cushing.
Other team members include Brittany Ochs, Kelsey Walker, and Megan Bothroyd. Both Ochs and Bothroyd are the seniors on this years team.
The Lady Jays will hit the course tomorrow when they travel to Choctaw for an 8:30 tee time before heading to Crimson Creek, in Shawnee, on April 6th.
