Girls Finish Second at Guthrie Invitational

By: Casey Porter

Eighteen teams gathered at Cimarron National in Guthrie on Wednesday, and each team sent their best five golfers to tee off in the 2008 Guthrie Invitational.

The 6A division featured 10 teams and saw Norman North place the lowest score of 364 and earn first place honors. Edmond North and Edmond Santa Fe finished 2nd and 3rd in respective order.

The 5A and below division had eight teams entered, and featured a Guthrie Lady Jay team that posted a team score of 406, good enough for second place. Duncan, the defending 5A state champions, posted the lowest of 343 finishing first.

The Lady Jays were led once again by sophomore Kacey Acker who posted the Lady Jays lowest score of 88. Kacey has shown consistency since becoming a Lady, and hopes to continue to lower her score. Her head coach, Mike Longstreth, believes she can get in the low eighties by Regionals.

“Kacey left a couple strokes out there, as does everybody, every time they play, so we really feel like she can shave a few strokes off, and get in the low eighties when it’s time to qualify for state.”

Tiffany Reaves looks to crack 100 before too long, and posted a 103 in the Invitational.  Along the same lines, Bailey Trimberger is gaining valuable experience and has improved her game by 15 strokes since the first tournament of the year. Coach Longstreth is excited about the improvement his team has made.

“We’re very excited about the improvement Bailey, Kelsey and Tiffany has made.  We really feel that if they continue to improve, and Kacey can get her score in the low eighties, then we have a good shot at qualifying our team for the state tournament. That’s something that hasn’t happened in a long time.”

The Lady Jays will next be in action next Thursday at Rose Creek with Deer Creek as the host.  For more information visit the podcast page and listen to the Coaches Corner with Head Coach Mike Longstreth.
