Golfers endure tough competition, weather

By: Chris Evans

Going into the 36-hole Edmond Memorial Golf Tournament, at Kickingbird Golf Course, boys head coach Ric Meshew knew the field was going to be tough, but add in the Oklahoma weather and the course was even tougher.

Guthrie would represent the only 4A team in the 5A dominant field that included dominant program Edmond North and others. A total of 18 teams and a few individuals competed on a chilly morning and afternoon.

Meshew knew the uphill challenge his group had, but the stiff winds did not help the matter. Understandably, golfers may be accustom to those type conditions, but this reporter and Van Shea Iven were not standing behind the No. 10 green.

Van Shea will have highlights of the tourney on his Okalahoma High School Express Show that airs Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. and replays at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning. The Guthrie baseball game with Norman High from the Choctaw Tourney will be on there as well.

As a team, the Jays shot a 362 in the first round, but turned around and improved 20 shots in the second round. Meshew told Guthrie Sports Page that he was impressed with the second round turnaround. Each round took about five hours to complete as the tourney began at 8:00 a.m.

Individual results: Derek Taylor 84-81, Logan Goode 91-88, Eric Mcintire 92-90, Brice Betchan 95-86, and Nick Klein 96-97.

Meshew added that a few Jay golfers were up the street at the Fairfax course where freshmen Jordan Crawford and Chad Klein competed.
