The Guthrie BlueJay football program continues on the
rise in Oklahoma high school football and the schedule for the 2010 and
2011 seasons may show the reality behind the statement. Every two years the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association releases the Average Daily Memberships (ADM) and some teams move up in class and some move down. That process also means football districts must realign and this year has provided many interesting changes. Guthrie will move in Class 5A, District 1 with Carl Albert and Noble, but after that five new teams will make up the district. Ada, Deer Creek, El Reno, Southeast, and Western Heights will all be new members of 5A-1 starting in 2010. The OSSAA must approve the districts to be made final. |
| The non-district schedule in '10 and '11 is perhaps more intriguing.
Guthrie will host Duncan Week 1, Ponca City in Week 2, and will travel
to Enid for Week 3. Off the schedule are the Shawnee Wolves. Shawnee moves up to 6A and may be looking for some "easier" games then perhaps the Jays in the non-district. I understand the logic behind the thinking, but it will be a shame with no Guthrie/Shawnee game on the schedule. A staple of a series over the years whether it was a district or non-district game. Also, gone are McGuinness and Piedmont. That makes perfect sense for Piedmont and for Guthrie in that matter. The Wildcats struggled to win a game two years ago and could just manage 3-wins a season ago. The last thing Piedmonts needs is a 5A powerhouse the week before starting district play. Guthrie has won all three meetings with Piedmont and have won handily 120-14 in those game combined. McGuinness has played the Jays tough over the last few years, including a win back in 2004 over the Jays. The final match-up, for the next few years anyway, will be this years season opener, Sept. 4th. It may be a little to early to be looking at Duncan, Ponca City, and Enid with scheme's and tendencies, although Guthrie could see Duncan this year in the play-off's, but as a Jays fan you can see it will be a jump up in competition and probably rightfully so. The last time a 6A team was on the Jays schedule was the Stillwater Pioneers. Stillwater made it a very lopsided series in those last few years and Guthrie knew they had to do something different. So they did and it was a step in the right direction in building the program. Now with the Jays program where it is now, it's tougher to schedule opponents. Just like in college football, the better you are the tougher it is, but as a fan, I am excited to see this type of non-district schedule. Maybe because we are not so familiar with these teams? Maybe, new destinations for Friday nights. Perhaps, it's just different to see an Enid, or Duncan on a Jays football schedule. Regardless, it will be fun to take on some of the boys of 6A and a respected program in Duncan.
