The Guthrie BlueJay wrestling squad and head coach Jack O'Connor did not quite get the numbers they were looking for coming out of regionals, but the Jays have two state tournament qualifiers.

Bryan Dutton wrestling
Freshmen Bryan Dutton will try and give his first round opponent in the state tournament his first loss of the season on Friday afternoon.
Sophomore Landry Chappell, at 215, and freshmen Bryan Dutton (140) overcame a stacked regional, in Claremore, to earn their first trip to the State Fair Arena for the varsity.

Chappell will be the No. 2 seed from the East, at 215, and will take on the No. 3 seeded Jacoby Brown, of Chickasha, from the West. Chappell is 25-9 on the season while the freshmen Brown is 30-7 overall. It will be the first match up between the two this season.

Dutton is the 4th overall seed from the East and will match up with undefeated and No.1 seed Kellan Torres. Torress, a freshmen as well, is a perfect 39-0 while Dutton enters at 30-4. Torress and Dutton are the only two freshmen in the weight class.

Chappell finished runner-up while Dutton took the fourth spot. The top four wrestlers of each weight division moved on to state in the double elimination format.

Dutton started out 2-0 and dropped his third match, but rallied to win his fourth match before falling in the 3rd place match.

Justin Ball took the same path as Dutton and Chappell with two wins out the gate, but Ball could not overcome his next opponent.

Devin Bilyeu, Dennis Murphy, and Chappell each got opening round pins. Kolt Rinehart also secured a first round win.

Jared Ball, Ryan Kitch, Michael Conner, Bilyeu, and Rinehart picked up wins in the first match on day two to stay alive.

Overall, Justin Ball, Rinehart, and Bilyeu finished fifth and just one match shy of the state tournament. Conner, Jeff Russell, and John Davison both finished in sixth place.

The 5A State Tournament will be Friday and Saturday inside the State Fair Areana.
