The Guthrie BlueJay wrestling squad and head coach Jack O'Connor did not quite get the numbers they were
looking for coming out of regionals, but the Jays have two state tournament
qualifiers.

try and give his first round opponent in the state
tournament his first loss of the season on Friday
afternoon. |

Sophomore Landry Chappell, at 215,
and freshmen Bryan Dutton (140) overcame a stacked
regional, in Claremore, to earn their first trip to the
State Fair Arena for the varsity.
Chappell will be the No. 2 seed from the East, at 215,
and will take on the No. 3 seeded Jacoby Brown, of
Chickasha, from the West. Chappell is 25-9 on the season
while the freshmen Brown is 30-7 overall. It will be the
first match up between the two this season.

Dutton is the 4th overall seed from the East and will
match up with undefeated and No.1 seed Kellan Torres.
Torress, a freshmen as well, is a perfect 39-0 while
Dutton enters at 30-4. Torress and Dutton are the only
two freshmen in the weight class.
Chappell finished runner-up while Dutton took the fourth
spot. The top four wrestlers of each weight division
moved on to state in the double elimination format.

Dutton started out 2-0 and dropped his third match, but
rallied to win his fourth match before falling in the
3rd place match.
Justin Ball took the same path as Dutton and Chappell
with two wins out the gate, but Ball could not overcome
his next opponent.
Devin Bilyeu, Dennis Murphy, and Chappell each got opening round pins. Kolt
Rinehart also secured a first round win.
Jared Ball, Ryan Kitch, Michael Conner, Bilyeu, and Rinehart picked up wins in
the first match on day two to stay alive.
Overall, Justin Ball, Rinehart, and Bilyeu finished fifth and just one match shy
of the state tournament. Conner, Jeff Russell, and John Davison both finished in sixth place.
The 5A State Tournament will be Friday and Saturday inside the State Fair
Areana.
