Guthrie head coach Jack O'Connor's wrestling squad started the season with a 45-19 win over the Perkins Demons in a home dual for the Jays. Guthrie is 1-0 on the season and Perkins drops to 0-1.

You can listen to the dual that was presented by Guthrie Sports Page by clicking here.

Guthrie took advantage with forfeits at 103, 125, 140, and 160 pounds to jump out to a 24-0 lead. Jays also took advantage of two pins as did Perkins.

In the 112 division, Perkins Hayden Wilson jumped out to a 5-0 first period lead over Jared Ball and ended with a 10-0 decision.

Dylan Marshall and Brett Cheany were even (2-2) after the first period in the 119 weight class, and again after period two (4-4), but then Marshall dominated from that point to win the match for Guthrie, 11-6.

Perhaps the best match of the night in the 130 division Guthrie's Kolt Rinehart needed overtime over Justus Edwards to win 7-5. Edwards jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the seven seconds of the match as he took Rinehart down to the mat and lead 4-1 after the first. Rinehart gained distance in the second period to cut the lead in half at 4-2 before earning three points in the final period to send the match into overtime.

Perkins Shorty Dolen got a pin with :38 left in the first period over Ryan Medina to give the Demons six quick points. However, Guthrie got two quick pins of their own when Jeff Russell took down Marlow Wilson with :45 left in the opening period in the 145 division and Guthrie's Dennis Murphy pinned his opponent with :53 seconds left in the first period.

Michael O'Connor hit the mat with Lucas Wright for the 189 match. Wright outscored O'Connor in each of the three periods to pull out the 9-4 win.

Perkins Marshall Nettles got a pin over Jays Tanner Goddard in the 215 match, but the Jays got a 6-2 win in the 285 class when John Dawson got a 6-2 win over Braxton Reid.

Ryan Kitch and Bryan Dutton each hit the mat in an exhibition and both got pins over their opponents. Dutton made quick work 1:28 into the match while Kitch got his pin in the third period.

Guthrie will participate in the Putnam City Tournament Friday and Saturday. The Jays won this tournament a year ago for their first school win since 1982.
