Mother nature played her part in the high school wrestling season last week, but
this week the BlueJay wrestling played their part.
Guthrie picked up a conference win over Piedmont in the first dual of the day
and in the nightcap finished off the Southeast Spartans inside a loud and packed
Guthrie High School gymnasium.
jack O'Connor's BlueJays improve to 6-1 in duals this season with one left on
the schedule with the Kingfisher Yellowjackets next Tuesday evening for Senior
Night.
The Junior Jays team also picked up two wins and with the win over Piedmont have
won the north of the Suburban Conference for the second straight season. Guthrie
Sports Page will have results and story. The Junior Jays will compete in State
this weekend at the State Fair Arena.
The varsity got an easy 65-15 win over the 4A Wildcats by taking advantage of
seven pins and three forfeits. The quickest pin of the night went to junior
Dennis Murphy, at 145, who pinned his opponent in 24 seconds. Justin Ball, Bryan
Dutton, Devin Bilyeu, Michael Conner, and Justin Chappell also picked up pins.
Jeff Russell, David Moody, and John Davison all won by forfeits. Jared Ball
(112) had no problem in his match with a tech fall.
Camden Helm could not overcome Bryce Henry with a 6-2 loss, but revenged the
loss by picking up a 7-3 decision over Southeast's Justin Robbins. Helm jumped
out to a 4-1 lead after the first period and did not let up from there.
The most exciting match of the night was the 171 weight class between Micheal
Conner and Southeast's Kevin Cabe. Conner grabbed the ankle of Cabe and took him
down with just two seconds left in the final period to pull off the 4-3 win
after trailing the entire match.
Conner's win helped the Jays secure a 39-27 win. In total, the Jays won 9 of the
14 duals with the Spartans.
Bryan Dutton got his second win of the night with his second pin as well. This
time the freshmen needed 1:27 to get the pin.
Dennis Murphy did not have as an easy time in his second match, but got a 3-1
decision and seemed to be in control the entire way.
The Jays got back-to-back pins with Russell and Bilyeu. Russell needed 3:49 to
get the win after jumping out to a 7-1 first period lead while Bilyeu needed
3:17 to get his second win of the day.
At 189, Moody enjoyed a 7-2 lead in the opening period before getting a pin with
:54 left in the second.
Sophomore Landry Chappell, 215, picked up a major decision with a 13-1 win.
Chappell was the more aggressive of the two. Chappell lead 4-0 after one and 8-0
after two periods.
Guthrie heavyweight John Davison was at a disadvantage before he even got onto
the mat as his opponent, Brent Pritchett, outweighed him by 56 pounds as
Prichett got the pin :29 seconds into the second period after a 0-0 first
period.
Justin Ball had a 17-2 major tech fall win as Jared Ball had a more tougher
time, but got a 6-5 win in the 112 weight class. Jared Ball outscored his
opponent 5-3 in the final period to pull out the win.
Guthrie will now compete in the Chickasha Tournament, on Monday, after the
conference decided not to have conference duals. The Jays will return back to
the home mat, Tuesday, as they host Kingfisher for Senior Night. To view the
