Although this may not be the strongest season for the El Reno Indian wrestling
program compared to years past, the Guthrie BlueJays are showing they are a
program on the rise.
The Jays traveled to El Reno, Tuesday evening, and picked up a dominating 47-18
win to pick up their second dual win of the season and improve to 2-0. El Reno
drops their dual record to 0-5 this season.
El Reno won 11 straight state championships from 1996 to 2006 and is in the top
10 in Oklahoma history in the number of state champions with 70 total for
one of the most successful programs in the state.
"We have been in the same district with these guys forever and during that
time they have been 11 time state champions, and it was a good win for us," head
coach Jack O'Connor said.

El Reno entered the dual ranked number 9 while the Jays were ranked 11th. Next
week's coaching ranking's should have the Guthrie program in the Top 10.
Guthrie took advantage of three forfeits at 125, 130, and 135 giving Ryan Kitch,
Ryan Medina, and Kolt Rinehart the night off.
Bryan Dutton continued a fast start to his varsity career with a pin 51 seconds
into the match over Aaron Mailloux at 140 pounds.
Joining Dutton in the pinning category was sophomore Landry Chappell. Chappell
took down Christian Bryant in the 215 pound division just before the end of the
first quarter.
O'Connor felt his team needed to win the lower weight divisions and he got two
wins out of the three with Jared Ball (112) and Camden Helm (119). Ball got a
4-3 decision that was contested to the final horn and Helm got an 11-2 major
decision.
El Reno's returning starter at 103, Jon Grube, picked up a 10-7 win over
Guthrie's Justin Ball, but O'Connor liked the effort down the stretch that he
got from Ball.
Devin Bilyeu got a 13-6 decision at 145 and junior Dennis Murphy picked up a
nice 7-1 win over three year starter Spencer Jackson. Murphy was able to ride
Jackson in two different periods.
Jeff Russell wrestling at 160, due to an injury to Michael Conner, dropped a 3-2
decision, but David Bryant filling in at 171 got a major decision with a 13-4
win.
Unfortunately for David Moody and John Davidson they were up against the best of
the best in the state and for that matter the nation at 189 and heavy weight.
The Dauphin brothers of Cory and Cody showed why they have earned a lot of
respect over the years. Cory Dauphin is a three time champion and is forecasted as a four time
champ come February 27th and Cody Dauphin is a two time champ headed toward a
third most likely.
Cody Dauphin, who is ranked in the top three in the nation, picked up a pin 1:15
in the match and Cory got a pin 4:22 into the match.
Guthrie will enter the biggest dual in some time when they travel to Deer Creek
Thursday.
The Jays are in the same district as Deer Creek, El Reno, and Northwest Classen.
Only one of the four teams will advance to the Dual State Championships so the
match-up with the Antlers is huge. To view the complete schedule and results

"This is going to be a big one," O'Connor said about the the Thursday dual.
"We're 2-0 and that's not bad, but we want more and we are working our way up
the food chain."
