The Guthrie BlueJay
wrestling team took on their second tournament of the season in the Southern
Oklahoma Invitational, in Duncan, and came away with a first place medal in the
championship round.
Overall, Guthrie came
away with a fifth place finish with 151.5 team points.
Commanche High School won the tourney by edging out last years winner and host
Duncan Demons, 190 to 189. Lawton finished third (170.5) and Noble (154.5)
walked away in fourth.
Freshmen Bryan Dutton competed in the 135 weight class and got a 3-1 decision
over Lawton's Daniel Turkelson in the championship round for the individual
championship. Last week Dutton won the Putnam City individual title in the 140
pound division.
Dutton's other match this season was an exhibition in the Perkins dual
when he earned a pinned 1:28 into the match. Dutton is now 9-0 on the season.
Kolt Rinehart and Ryan Kitch joined Dutton in the championship round, but both
came up short with losses in their final match. Rinehart lost an 8-2 to Durant's
Trey Bowman and Duncan's Justin Hughes got a pin over Kitch 4:50 into the match
in the 125 weight division.
The BlueJays sent four wrestlers into the consolation round, but managed just
one win with Michael Conner's 7-2 decision over Duncan's Halston Marshall at 171
pounds to finish third overall.
Jays Jeff Russell, Landry Chappell, and John Davison each finished fourth
overall in their class. Chappell participated for the first time this season and
was handed a 3-1 setback to Duncan's Ben Copeland in the 215 weight class.
Next up for the Jays after the holiday break will be the Northwest Classen and
Putnam City Dual on January 7th in Oklahoma City.
