The Guthrie Wrestling team was nearly three weeks separated from their last
competitive matches in the Duncan Tournament when they took on the tough,
daunting annual Cushing Tournament this past weekend.
The Jays got in some practice time before heading to Cushing, where the Jays landed
four in the championship round. Overall, Guthrie, who are currently ranked 11th
in 5A, finished tenth place (84 points) with tradition power Perry (218.5)
taking home first followed by Sallisaw (169.5) and then host Cushing (150).
Sophomore Landry Chappell brought home a third place finish in the 215 weight
division. Chappell got an exciting 3-1 overtime decision over Perkins' Wright.
Freshmen Bryan Dutton, who won both the Duncan and Putnam City tournaments,
finished fourth at 140 pounds. Dutton dropped a close 5-4 decision to Piedmont's
Pyle in his last match.
Justin Ball was fifth in 103 pounds and Jon Davidson finished sixth overall at
275.
Jays head coach Jack O'Connor's team will start to hit their schedule hard
starting with duals with both 11th ranked El Reno and 3rd ranked Deer Creek.
Guthrie, who is ranked 10th in duals action, will travel to El Reno on Tuesday
and Edmond on Thursday.
