Grapplers off to fast start of season

By: Chris Evans

With only three events that have come and gone in the 2008-2009 Guthrie Wrestling season, it has already been a season to remember for the Jays.

The Jays began their season with a tournament win by winning the Putnam City Tournament. The tournament win was the first since 1982 for a Guthrie team. The 1982 Jays won the Carl Albert Tournament. The win also bumped the Jays into the Top 15 rankings at No. 14 this week according to the coaches poll.

Kolt Rinehart, Dylan Turpin, Ryan Bilyeu, and John Kane each took home first place medals in the PC tourney while Dennis Murphy and David Moody took home third place. Jays head coach Jack O'Connor came away with the Outstanding Coach Award.

Guthrie the following week had back-to-back dual wins over Perkins and Northwest Classen. The Jays traveled to Perkins and got a 59-10 victory and then open up the home portion of the schedule with a 66-15 win over NW.

So far on the young season the Jays have four wrestlers that are undefeated including Bilyeu, Rinehart, Kane, and Turpin.

Before the Jays school schedule started, Bilyeu and Kane took part in a national tournament in the Oklahoma Open. Each had tough matches on the first day, but went 2 and 1.

Guthrie will travel to Duncan for the Duncan Tournament this Friday and Saturday before hitting the Christmas break. The season will resume on January 6th with a dual at Kingfisher. Homecoming is scheduled for Jan. 8th against Ada.
