Tough field, tough day for Jays

The Guthrie BlueJay wrestling squad finished 10th in a stout field that was the Carl Albert Invitational. The host team, Carl Albert, walked away with the team title, edging out Harrah by four points.

 

How tough is tough? Guthrie senior Ryan Bilyeu suffered a rare defeat in the finals. Jared Porter, of Carl Albert, took down Bilyeu in a 3-1 decision. It was a match-up of No. 1 vs No. 2 in the 145 pound division. Porter over takes Bilyeu, as well, at the top spot in the latest rankings according to okwrestle.com.

 

David Moody the other BlueJay to make the championship round, fell to Northwest Classen's Anderson by fall. Moody entered the invitational ranked fifth in the 215 division.

 

In the consolation round, John Kane was victorious, 5-2, with a win over Shawnee's Gabrion Frazier. Kane ranked third, in Class 5A at 189, got the win over No. 5 Frazier. Top ranked Zach Aylor (Carl Albert) took home the championship by defeating second ranked Colton Hill, of Chickasha.

 

Dennis Murphey, ranked No. 10, fell to Catoosa's Gray in a close match-up 4-2.

 

Guthrie will next be in action, Tuesday night, at Western Heights. The Jets finished 12th overall and were 21 points behind the Jays. Heights is led by 160 pound Kendal Melvin, who is currently ranked second, and Kenneth Hartfield at 152. Hartfield enters the dual ranked fourth.
