Ryan Bilyeu was on top of Class 5A wrestlers at the 145 pound division all season long until his lone loss to Carl Albert's Jared Porter. Well, Bilyeu had another chance at Porter in the final match of the season.
However, Bilyeu was defeated in triple overtime as Porter walked away with the championship. Bilyeu concludes an outstanding career and a 32-2 senior season. More details to come.
Would we want it any other way for a state championship? In the 145 pound weight division, it will be No. 1 versus No. 1 Saturday evening.
Ryan Bilyeu versus Jared Porter. Guthrie vs Carl Albert. Round 2
Bilyeu the top seed from the West got a pin in his afternoon match over Corey Delk of Skiatook and then an 8-3 decision over Altus' Jeremy Delzer, Friday evening.
Porter, the top seed from the East, took down Harrah's Jacob Whitten before getting a major decision over Deer Creek's Heath Boyd, 5-3 to reach the finals.
Bilyeu, 32-1, has spent the entire season ranked No.1 and No. 2 in the Class 5A 145 pound weight division. Carl Albert's Jared Porter is currently No. 1 according to okwrestle.com. Porter, 36-1, is the only wrestler to come out with a win over Bilyeu this season. The finals is set for 7:30 at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds.
The only other BlueJay to make the state tournament was John Kane, who did not find out until three days before the start of the 88th state tournament.
Kane wrestling at the 189 weight division dropped his first match, in the afternoon, by a major decision to Carl Albert's Zach Aylor. Aylor won his semi-final match to reach the finals.
Kane would respond in the evening session with an 8-2 decision over Ada's Rance Rue to advance in the consolation round.
