Bluejays Split Dual with Kingfisher

By: Casey Porter

The Bluejays wrestled a tough dual Tuesday night against Kingfisher, at the Junior High gym, and dropped a 39-33 decision. The Guthrie grapplers got off to a rough start losing at 103 and having to forfeit at 112 pounds. These losses put Guthrie in a quick 12-0 hole before they could get into the meat of their line-up.

Relying on sophomore Kolt Rinehart to change the momentum, the 119 pounder did just that.  In the third period he finished off a match in which he had dominated with a pin. Following this performance at 125 pounds, senior Corey Cummings was facing a two time state placer. Cummings showed the state of Oklahoma his intentions of being a state placer himself, and won by pin just 16 seconds into the second period.

Continuing the momentum at 130 pounds, Jeff Russell hit a single leg late in the first period of his match, and used his strong half nelson to record the win by pin. Ryan Bilyeu continues to dominate and kept his undefeated season alive with a pin 41 seconds into the third period.

Aaron Vick returned to the mat after a weekend off and wasted no time getting back into the groove.  In the first period, Vick hit a low single leg and rode out the period.  In the third period, the sophomore turned to his double leg and was just as effective with it. Vick won the match 6-0.

Moving back to heavy weight, David Moody cleared the way for Tanner Goddard to dominate at 215. Goddard came out in the first period and completed a lateral drop to claim dominance in the match. In the second period, Goddard chose top and it turned out to be the right decision as he was able to turn and pin his opponent.

Despite the good work by many of the Bluejay wrestlers, the Yellow Jackets were able to record the dual victory by a score of 39-33.  The Bluejays are now 1-1 in Duals and will next be in action after the Christmas Break.

Junior High

The Junior High grapplers were looking for redemption in more ways than one Tuesday night against Kingfisher. The ‘Jays were looking to get the bad taste out of their mouth from last Thursday’s dual loss at Ada, and they were also looking for revenge from last year’s 52-6 loss at the hands of Kingfisher. Revenge is exactly what they got as five Bluejays won by fall en route to a route over the Yellow Jackets 62-6.

The Bluejays wasted very little time in dominating their matches as four wrestlers recorded their pins in the first periods of their matches. Camden Helm won by fall just 1:06 seconds into the first period, and Bryan Dutton kept his undefeated season alive with a fall 1:23 into his match.

Michael Conner took his man to the mat and won by pin just 29 seconds in, and Zack Brown had the fastest match of the night with a pin that took just 12 seconds. Landry Chappell won his match by fall :44 seconds into the second period and Jake Jameson won probably the most exciting match of the night 16-13.

Kingfisher had beaten the ‘Jays 52-6 last year, and had to be surprised at the quick turn around the Bluejays have made.  The ‘Jays will next be in action after the Christmas break.
