Bluejay grapplers hit the mat

By: Casey Porter

The Guthrie Bluejay wrestlers spent their weekend in Putnam City and showed well for themselves. Head coach Jack O’Connor was very pleased with the shape his wrestlers were in.

Kolt Rinehart continued to impress by placing fourth, while Senior Corey Cummings, “Potbelly” wrestled the No. 1 wrestler and defending state champion in the state at his weight, and wrestled him very well. Cummings won five matches, lost just one, and finished third.

State tournament returnee, Ryan Bilyeu, took the No. 1 ranked wrestler at his weight to overtime, in the finals match, and lost 3-1 placing him second.  Sophomore Aaron Vick continues to improve in just his fourth year to wrestle and placed fourth at 171 pounds.

Sophomore Tanner Goddard, fresh off the gridiron, is still trying to get in wrestling shape and placed sixth at 215. Junior Dillon Turpin is wrestling tougher than ever and Josh and Jeff Russell continue to work incredibly hard and improved greatly from their first tournament.

Guthrie will next be in action Thursday at Ada. The Junior High will start at 5:00 with the High School immediately following. This weekend the Guthrie grapplers will participate in a tournament in Duncan.  For more information visit the podcast page and listen to the Wrestling Coaches Corner with head coach Jack O’Connor.

Junior High

The Junior High wrestled in the Shawnee dual tournament this past weekend and faced some of the best competition in the state.

The Bluejay grapplers earned two wins in the duals and lost four.  They beat Western Heights and Harrah, and lost to Catoosa, Ada, Choctaw and Tuttle.

Two Bluejays, Bryan Dutton and Michael Connor went undefeated, while Landry Chappell lost just one match and compiled a 5-1 record in the tournament.

Dutton and Chappell dominated their way to two pins each while Connor won all of his matches by fall. The Junior High will next be in action Thursday when they travel with the High School for a dual at Ada.
