2009 Opponent Preview: Piedmont Wildcats

GuthrieSporsPage.com previews each of Guthrie's 2009 opponents.

Guthrie, Okla. -- As the BlueJays prepare for the upcoming football season, GuthrieSportsPage.com prepares you with everything you'll need to know about the opposition.

In the coming weeks, we will take an in-depth look at each of Guthrie's 2009 opponents with stat breakdowns, players to watch and keys to the game. Next up, Piedmont Wildcats on September 18, at Stout Field, in Piedmont.

    Game Buildup
This will be the fourth meeting between these two schools and the Jays have dominated the series with a 3-0 record by a combine score of 120-14. Jays will be the favorites once again.

    Season Outlook
The Wildcats have won just three games in the last two seasons, but improved after an 0-10 2007 season. The Wildcats will have to replace a running back, two linebackers, and defensive end. 4A-1 is not the best place to get better, but new head coach Rob Green has different thoughts if the starters step up.

Green  will change things up on offense from a multiple-I to a spread formation and in return will spotlight his quarterback Travis Mustain even more so.

    Player to Watch

Travis Mustain | QB | Senior

Other Key Players: Jeremy Harris and Corbin Ross

    Key vs. Piedmont's Offense
Mustain is strong, fast on the ground with a decent arm and look for the Jays to attack the quarterback. The Wildcats like to run the ball and the Jays like stopping the run.

Piedmont must replace their entire offensive line, but Corbin Ross is a good blocking tight end and will help jump start the young group.

    Key vs. Piedmont's Defense
Guthrie piled 230-yards rushing a year ago and will look to repeat the same against a defense that relied on their linebacker play. The Panthers will insert two new names into those spots including Ross.

    Game Implications
Final game before district play begins and both teams want to be clicking on all cylinders.
