Rafe Watkins is easily the all time
winningest coach in Guthrie High School football history in just
8 seasons and three games, but after Friday's game with the
Durant Lions, Watkins will have coached more games at GHS then
any other coach in the school's history.
In
last week's win over Piedmont, 34-14, Watkins coached his 100th
game as the ball coach and will pass Robin Roof, who coached
exactly 100 games, in 9 full seasons (1988-1996), against
Durant.
Watkins arrived in Guthrie back in 2001 from Chisholm High School. Watkins
was handed a program that just came off their first winning season since 1991
when the 2000 Jays went 6-4 under the direction of Ty Prestige, current head
coach at Mustang.
Here are some more facts:
*
Watkins has won more games at Guthrie High then any
other coach in Bluejay past. Currently, Watkins has 84 career
Guthrie wins. The next coach on the list is Roof with 45
wins.
* Watkins is the
third, on the Bluejay coaching list, all time in winning
percentage of .7736. Coaches Bob Sumrall and E.H. Winslow each have a
percentage of .8000. However, both coaches only coached one season and combined
were 12-3, in the two seasons, in 1908 and 1945, respecitvely.
* Watkins is currently tied with Max
Smiley (1979-1987) and Roof (1988-1996) by now coaching 9 seasons at Guthrie
(2001-2009).
* During the current tenure of Watkins, his teams have the longest
consecutive winning seasons with eight. Before that the record stood at six back
in 1903 to 1908. Watkins teams in 2007 and 2008 combined for a 20-game winning
streak, another school record.
*
Watkins is the only coach to win a State
Championship, at Guthrie, in both 2002 and 2007.
* Watkins has helped produce 15 of the 30 football All-Staters in
Guthrie history.
Guthrie has been playing football for 106 seasons and sad to say there have been
just 45 winning seasons in total, but Guthrie Bluejay football is in the best
run ever in the programs history.
