Not many things have gotten in the way of the high school career's of
the 2009 seniors Keaton Callins, Donte' Foster, and Skyler Smith on the
football field, but mother nature proved she may have been their
toughest opponent yet. An historic thunderstorm descended on the Wichita Falls area Saturday evening — historic in that the lightning accompanying it doomed the 72nd Oil Bowl to go down as the first in the series history to go down as a cancellation. Many Guthrie fans made the three and a half hour trip, but to only be turned away. The all star football game between Oklahoma and Texas will not be made up. |
| The Texas storm blew into the
area and the kick-off time was postponed until 9:00 pm, but at 8:20
officials made the decision to call the game with radar showing more
severe weather coming. Gary Hurren and family made the trip and spent a hour in a conveneient store, with no electricity, on the way back to the Sooner state. "It was a total buzz kill," Zach Robbins said on the cancellation. Robbins made two trips to the South as he joined Smith for the banquet Friday night. The Texas head coach may have summed it up best. "This is actually worse than losing," coach Mike Chaney told the Wichita Falls Times Record News. The players from both teams reported on Tuesday and went through two-a-day practices.
