Shawnee -- Guthrie battled tough for three quarters against the No. 1 team in the state, and came up short, losing 33-23. The loss improved Shawnee to 8-0 and 5-0 in the district. Guthrie, dropped to 4-4 and 3-2 in the district, and all but locked up the third seed in class 5A-2.
Shawnee snaps a four game losing streak to the Jays with the win as well as tie the series at 5-5 in the last 10 meetings. Shawnee leads the overall series 16-10.
On the opening possession, the Blue Jay defense stuck the Wolves and forced them to punt, after Jaden Chappell knocked the third down pass to the grass.
Guthrie’s first possession started out with a Derek Kelly three yard run. However, Guthrie was saved on a third down pass interference penalty by Shawnee; it pushed the ball up to the Guthrie 44-yard line, and a new set of downs. Kelly had a one yard run to the 45, and after two more incomplete passes, Guthrie punted the ball back to Shawnee.
Class 5A’s leading passer, Brayle Brown hit Saulyer Saxton for a six yard pass. Jordan Acock pushed the ball up for one more yard making it third and three from the Wolves 21-yard line. On third down, Guthrie’s defense stepped in and intercepted the pass. Marcus Ware would return the ball to the Shawnee 30-yard line, allowing Guthrie its first real scoring chance.
The drive started out with freshman Bryan Dutton sacked on the first play of the drive, pushing the ball back to the 35-yard line. On second down, Dutton found senior JP Bruner in the flat on the screen pass, and moved the ball down for 11 yards, making it a third and four. Bruner bobbled the option and lost three yards, and it was all of a sudden fourth and seven.
Outside of field goal range, and too close to punt, Coach Rafe Watkins elected to go for it. Dutton hit all world wide receiver, Kentrell Brothers, for a 19-yard reception; the ball reaches the Shawnee 10-yard line.
After a penalty, incompletion and a sack, brought up Hank Hudson for a 27-yard field goal, and Guthrie led the #1 team in the state 3-0 with 3:34 left in the first quarter. It was a six play 32-yard drive that ate up 4:39 of the clock.
Brothers was named as the Farmers and Merchants Bank Player of the Game.
Shawnee, however, answered on the next drive, traveling 80-yards in five plays. Brown was the main character of the drive, accounting for a 34-yard scramble that went from their 40-yard line to the Guthrie 26-yard line. The very next play, Brown hit Beau Davis for a 26-yard touchdown pass. The extra point was missed; Shawnee led 6-3 with 1:05 in the first quarter.
Guthrie would have a nice return and be settled at their 36-yard line and on the first play; they were the recipient of a 15-yard face mask moving the ball to midfield. On the second play of the drive, Dutton found Brothers on a 49-yard touchdown pass. The Blue Jays quickly jumped back up on top after the Hank Hudson PAT made the score 10-6, with :33 seconds left in the first quarter.
Shawnee’s offense seemed frustrated and confused, as Acock came out made a decent run, and the drive stalled after that. Shawnee punted the ball.
Guthrie’s first few plays of their next drive resulted in a fourth down. Watkins would gamble though. Fourth down, the Blue Jays would fake a punt and find Brothers just enough to get the first down. Guthrie would run for three yards, and then Dutton hit Zack Olson for a four yard reception. Dutton then would have an incomplete pass, bringing up a fourth down again. Hudson’s field goal attempt was blocked; Guthrie fell on the blocked kick. Shawnee took over at their 42-yard line.
After a long drive by Shawnee, which resulted in a great defensive red zone stand by Guthrie, Shawnee would turn the ball over on downs. Guthrie had the ball at their 17-yard line. However, just two plays later, Guthrie fumbled and the Wolves fell on the ball, and all of a sudden the momentum changed, and Shawnee was driving.
As it seemed Guthrie’s defense was holding again, Brown shows why he has the most touchdown passes in the state, hitting Nick Berry. Extra point was good. Shawnee took a 13-10 lead into halftime.
Guthrie started with the ball in the second half, and couldn’t do much. Two straight incomplete passes. Then on third down, Dutton was sacked inside the five yard line, forcing Guthrie to punt the ball.
Shawnee’s next drive started with Brown hitting Saxton and Acock would have a five yard run. Later in the drive, Acock ran the ball down to the two yard line on a fourth down. Acock punched it in on the very next play, making the score 20-10 Wolves.
Guthrie’s offense became very stagnant in the third quarter, going three and out on the next possession. Shawnee took over on their own 40-yard line. Brown and Acock would put the Guthrie defense on their heels, with a combination of dive plays and play-action passing. Brown and Saxton again hooked up for a 25-yard pass. Acock stalled on a couple of run plays, and it would come up to a fourth and three on the Guthrie 27-yard line. That’s when Acock busted it open big for a 27-yard touchdown run. Extra point was missed, making the score 26-10.
After another Blue Jay stalled drive, Acock would do it again, from two yards out. The touchdown accounted for his third rushing touchdown of the second half. The score was 33-10 with 7:47 remaining in the game.
Finally Guthrie’s offense started to get on track. After a pass to Brothers, Zack Olson had a reception that pushed ball into Shawnee territory. That made it third and two. The next play was another touchdown bomb to Brothers for 26-yard touchdown pass. Hudson nailed the PAT, Guthrie started to get back into that game. Score was 33-17 with 5:00 remaining.
Shawnee stalled and was forced to punt. Guthrie took over about their 29-yard line. The Blue Jays made a big run and push the ball to their 49-yard line. After a penalty, Dutton wasn’t done. He found Brothers again, for another 49-yard touchdown pass. It was his third of the game. The score was now 33-23, Shawnee. Guthrie was forced to go for the two point conversion. Shawnee’s defense finally made a huge play, sacking Dutton on the conversion attempt.
Guthrie would recover the onside kick, about their 49-yard line with 3:30 remaining.
Dutton, however, was sacked on the first play of the drive back to the 40-yard line, he found Brothers and after the penalty the ball was moved to the Shawnee 42 with 1:44 remaining. Guthrie called a time out to get set up. On the first play after the time out, Dutton threw his only interception of the game, as Leon Davis intercepted the ball.
Shawnee was able to run the ball to end the game. The Wolves escaped a scare with a 33-23 win over Guthrie.
Guthrie’s defense was stout overall, holding Shawnee to just 263 yards of total offense. Brayle Brown was 12-22 for only 128 yards passing, with two touchdowns. He also had one interception early in the first quarter. However, Acock was very big in the third quarter. He accounted for three touchdown runs of 2, 27, and 6 yards.
Dutton would have a good game overall for a freshman that has just flourished throughout the season. He was 13-27 for 233 yards and three touchdown passes and one interception. Brothers was fantastic, pulling in three touchdown passes and 203-yards receiving.
Shawnee travels to Noble next week. Noble, who got their first win over Capitol Hill 48-7, is 1-7 on the season. Guthrie takes on Capitol Hill next week at the Rock.
