Guthrie -- In rivalries, you always have intense matchups; however, occasionally you’ll have a night like the Blue Jays encountered Thursday night.
Guthrie was brought down to reality with a 40-14 blowout loss to Carl Albert. The loss ended Guthrie’s four game winning streak, and gave them their first district loss.
The loss is the third worse defeat in the past nine seasons. Douglass gave Guthrie a 29-point loss (43-14) in 2001 and Shawnee defeated the Jays 35-7 back in 2005.
Tre Porter looked like the pre-season all state selection, as he ran for 84 yards on five carries and scored two touchdowns.
In the first quarter, Carl Albert took their first possession and marched down the field in 7-plays for 54-yards, capping it off with an 18-yard touchdown run by Porter. Guthrie blocked the extra point Carl Albert was up 6-0.
Twenty seconds later, after a Guthrie turnover, Realmuto kept the ball for himself, pushing the score to 13-0.
Guthrie had trouble moving the ball against the stout Carl Albert defense in the first half. After punting the ball back to the Titans, they would control the clock and methodically drive the ball down the field in eight plays for 70-yards. Porter scored his second touchdown of the quarter, and the extra point made it 20-0 with :40 left to go in the first quarter.
It’s easy to say Jelsma Stadium was stunned on the home side.
Another long Carl Albert drive pushed the score to 27-0 after Realmuto hit Dwight Dobbins for a 19-yard touchdown pass, capping off a 11 play 55-yard drive.
As the first half wound to a close, Realmuto would do it again, hitting Wright for a 19-yard touchdown pass. It was Realmuto’s second touchdown pass of the game.
At the half it was: Carl Albert 33, Guthrie 0.
Second half, Carl Albert was forced to punt, and the Blue Jays would get the ball and turn it over. Carl Albert picked up the fumble and return it deep into Blue Jay territory. From there, Dobbins would get into the end zone for the second time on the night, on a 10-yard run. Carl Albert, fortunately would not score the rest of the game.
However, late in the third quarter, Carl Albert was driving, and senior Jaden Chappell would grab the blocked punt and then return it 68-yards for the first Guthrie points of the night. Score stood at 40-7.
Early in the fourth quarter, Guthrie got the ball on their one yard line, and drove the ball in five plays for 99 yards, ending with Bryan Dutton hitting JP Bruner for a 17 yard touchdown pass. Guthrie cut the lead to 40-14.
It was only the fourth loss since the renovation of “The Rock.” It was the second loss since then to Carl Albert. Guthrie drops to 4-3 on the season overall, and 3-1 in district. They still hold a (+29) in district points.
Guthrie travels next Friday to No. 1 Shawnee (7-0, 4-0). Game time is at 7:30 in Shawnee. The Wolves are coming off a 63-28 victory over Ardmore. The Shawnee game will also be the last road game for the Blue jays Jho will then come home to battle Capitol Hill (0-7, 0-4) and Noble (0-7, 0-4), right before they head into the playoffs.
