The Shawnee Wolves are enjoying an undefeated 2009 season with a
7-0 record and an offense that is lighting up scoreboards and
ranks among the elite in offensive numbers. The Wolves are
attempting their first undefeated season since 1973.
The Guthrie BlueJays (4-3) travel to Shawnee, Friday night, for
another key 5A-2 match-up. A Shawnee win all but guarantee's a
district championship and two home play-off games. A Jays win
creates a 3-way tie with Carl Albert and would then come down to
district points for play-off positioning.
The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM, or
streaming live on
Guthrie
Sports Page Radio. The pre-game is set for 7:00 p.m.
Guthrie will be just the third team on the Shawnee schedule with
a current winning record (Carl Albert and Harrah) and really
have not been challenged outside of Carl Albert. That game came
down to the final few minutes with the Wolves coming up with a
game saving fourth down defensive stop.
Shawnee was 6-0 at Jim Thorpe Stadium last year and is currently
4-0 this season at home.
Shawnee will try and stop the Jays four game winning streak over
the Wolves, including last year's 35-17 setback. Shawnee leads
the overall series 15-10 in a series that will come to an end
for at least the next two seasons in a series that was not
renewed when the Wolves learned they would be playing in Class
6A next season.
The Wolves are coming off a 63-28 win over Ardmore, where Shawnee added up
531-yards of offense and scored on eight of 11 possessions and simply outscored
the Tigers. Shawnee led at the half 35-28.
Junior quarterback Brayle Brown, son of head coach Billy Brown and younger
brother of former Shawnee quarterback Tucker Brown, enters second in
passing in
Class 5A with 1465 yards and 20 passing scores. However, much like his brother, Brayle is a dual threat and has rushed for over 550-yards with 9 touchdowns to
cap it off.
When Brown is not running himself he is handing off to the leading scorer in 5A
to senior Jordan Acock. Acock has 16 scores and 701-yards rushing, but is also a
threat catching the ball out of the backfield. Guthrie defensive coordinator
Kelly Beeby said Acock is a good blocking back and does not go down on first
contact.

Through the air Shawnee is led by senior wide out Sauyler Saxson with
29-catches, 614-yards, and seven scores. Add all that up and Saxson is tops in
receiving when it comes to 5A receivers. Gabrion Frazier, Leon Davis, and Nick
Berry have combined for 40 catches and 10 touchdowns.
Defensively, the Wolves have not been as sound as the offensive has by allowing
over 300-yards, including 172-yards through the air and 20-points a game, in
which, Guthrie averages 20-points a contest.
Kevin Coat leads the defensive charge with 68 tackles and four sacks followed by
Tanner Heatley's 42 tackles and two sacks.
The Jays offense will try and get going after being shut down by the Titans a
week ago. Guthrie, who had their four game winning streak snapped last week,
will try and get the running game going. In all three losses this season, the
Jays have failed to rush for over 100-yards.
Quarterback Bryan Dutton is fifth in passing in 5A with 1001 yards along with 14
scores in the air. Guthrie is averaging 123-yards on the ground and 143-yards
passing. Dutton will be looking for the fifth leading receiver in junior
Kentrell Brothers, who has 445-yards receiving and four scores. Brothers is
third in sacks with eight and has collected two interceptions.
