With Class 5A now cut in half for the play-off's both Guthrie and Duncan feel like they have something to prove. One team will do that when the Guthrie BlueJays and the Duncan Demons meet up for the opening round play-off game.

Text Message Alerts
Guthrie (6-4) travels to Duncan for a 7:30 start, Friday night, and are winners of their last four opening round play-off games. The Jays completed their 10th consecutive winning season. Easily a school record.

Duncan (8-2) saw their six-game winning streak snapped last week, in El Reno, are back in the play-off's after missing out last season with a 5-5 record.

The winner moves on next week and plays either Tulsa East Central or Pryor in the second round.

Guthrie and Duncan are similar in many cases, but also differ in many cases.

The noticeable differences are: Duncan has more size. Guthrie has more speed. Duncan runs the ball exceptionally well. Guthrie passes the ball well.

The similar aspects start with both teams starting an underclassmen at quarterback. The Demons trot out sophomore Brandon Wilson while the Jays counter with freshmen Bryan Dutton. Wilson is more impressive on the ground then Dutton, stats wise, but Dutton wins the stat race in the passing department.

Dutton currently ranks third in Class 5A passing with 1601 yards in the air to go along with 23 passing scores. Combine his rushing numbers of 403 and he has accumulated 2,000 yards of offense. Again, a freshmen.

Wilson (5'11, 202 lbs) , who won the quarterback job before the season started as did Dutton, has piled up over 1500 total yards in the run happy offense. He has 642 rushing yards and 873 passing yards with six combine scores.

Wilson's primary running back is junior Payton Atchley (5'5, 162) who leads the team in rushing with 740-yards and nine touchdowns. However, the Demons will counter with sophomore Jordan Laskey, who has 546 rushing yards and eight touchdown's.

Perhaps the biggest reason the Demons lead 5A in rushing is head coach Jim Hollaway's offensive line. The big boys up front average six foot and 239 pounds and is anchored by junior Dylan Dismuke (6'7, 308). Dismuke then turns around and plays the defensive line where the Demons have been stingy all season.

Dismuke clogs the holes for linebackers Dane Steil and Atchley. Steil, a senior, is second on his team with 92 tackles behind the junior Atchley who has 96. Dylan Laurens (6'3, 280) will come in and play on the front line as well for the Demons.

The Demon defense is allowing just 84-yards rushing a game and ranks among the best in stopping the run and more importantly only their opponents 15.9 points a game.

Duncan's only two losses on the season have come to El Reno and Carl Albert, who earlier in the season also gave the Jays two of their four losses. Duncan has wins over Seminole, Ardmore, Chickasha, Altus, Deer Creek, Lawton Mac, NW Classen, and Western Heights.

Meanwhile, Guthrie is coming off two shut-out wins over inferior opponents in Capitol Hill and Noble. The Jays have not played a Duncan team under ninth year head man Rafe Watkins. In his tenure, Guthrie is 5-2 in opening round games, including 4-0 in the past four seasons. The only time the Jays have opened the play-off's on the road was back in 2003 when the Jays lost 20-0 to Ardmore.

If nothing else, this will a good preview of the 2010 season opener when Duncan travel to Guthrie to open the season, but this game Friday night will prove a whole lot more in the end.

The game can be heard on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM as well as on Guthrie Sports Page Radio. Chris Evans, Casey Porter, Craig Fleck, and Shawn Ingle will bring you the exciting action.
