District 5A-2 Week 5 update:
This week we will shift our focus. We will be discussing solely the Bluejays’ district, District 5A-2. This district, like I’ve said every week, is easily the strongest district. 5A-2 is beginning to put separation between its contenders and pretenders and this coming Friday will hopefully help define which teams are for real."
At the top of the contender list as well as the district rankings is Guthrie at 2-0 in district play and 5-0 overall. Guthrie has the best scoring defense in the state giving up merely 5-points per game. In 2nd place is the Carl Albert Titans, also with a 2-0 record in district play, but they have an overall record of 4-1, with their only loss coming against Tulsa Washington. The race begins to heat up when we come to the third place slot as Shawnee, Durant, Ardmore, and Harrah all have 1-1 records. Shawnee and Ardmore both have 4-1 overall records. Ardmore’s only loss came against the ‘Jays, while the Shawnee Wolves’ loss came against the Titans. Noble, looking to slip into the playoffs in a tough district is not supporting their own case with a 0-2 district record. Those two losses have come at the hands of Ardmore and Durant, both teams that Noble needed to beat to have a shot at the playoffs. In addition, Noble still has Carl Albert, Shawnee and Guthrie (in my opinion the best 3 teams in the District) on their schedule.
This week’s key game in District 2 comes when the Durant Lions face off against the Shawnee Wolves. This game will help clear up the third spot in the district and it will be a good gauge of how the Bluejays should compare to Shawnee.
Following the Wolves loss at Carl Albert, I talked with one of the officials from the game. He shared that Shawnee quarterback Brayle Brown (a sophomore, first year starter, and brother of Tucker Brown) appeared intimidated by Carl Albert’s defense. He mentioned that Brown was not comfortable in the pocket and showed antsy feet all night. With Brown being uncomfortable the Shawnee offense could not kick-start. He also shared that Shawnee’s defense was very big and aggressive and shut out Carl Albert vaunted rushing attack in the second half. The Titans scored their two second half touchdowns on interception returns by Tre Porter and Daytawion Lowe.
Also, this official specifically mentioned Daytawion Lowe and Christian Smith as being very good defenders for Carl Albert. I asked him about Carl Albert’s quarterback JT Realmuto and he said that the Titans used a single wing formation (a.k.a Wild Titan) where they snapped the ball directly to standout running back, David Oku. The report of the game said that Shawnee shut down Oku in the second half. This official also mentioned that the game was highly charged and both teams were fired up and getting after each other. As the Wolves and Titans approach on the Bluejays’ schedule Guthrie supporters should be ready for very competitive, emotionally charged, nailbiting games.
As I mentioned above the key game this week is the Durant versus Shawnee match-up. Should Durant win that game it will definitely shake up my views on the elite of our district. As always, GO JAYS!!!!
