5A Outlook End of Week 3
Publisher Note: 5A Football with Mystery BlueJay is a column by.........The Mystery BlueJay. The Mystery BlueJay will take a look at Class 5A from week to week. So who is the Mystery BlueJay? If you have a guess, or a comment on the column then visit the GSP Message Board.
After three weeks of football in 5A, the projection continues to show that District 5A-2 is far superior to the other districts. 5A-2 has a 17-7 overall record while none of the three other districts having a winning record. 5A-1 comes in at 10-14, 5A-3 is 11-13 and 5A-4 is 8-16.
5A-1 has one undefeated team with a 3-0 record and that is Lawton MacArthur. El Reno and Deer Creek come in at 2-1. Northwest follows with a 1-2 record as do Altus and Duncan. The other two teams are yet to find a victory and they are Western Heights and Chickasha.
5A-2 has three unbeaten teams, more than any other district. Shawnee, Guthrie, and Ardmore all have unblemished records. Carl Albert, Durant, and Noble follow with 2-1 records. Both Harrah and Capital Hill have already secured one victory each and stand at 1-2. 5A-2 is the only district that doesn’t have a team with no wins. Guthrie still has the top 5A defense, tied with Bishop Kelly, both having given up only 10 points.
5A-3 has one unbeaten team in Bishop Kelley. Kelly has the dubious task of playing Tulsa Washington this week. This should be a pretty good matchup and the score should be interesting. This game is my pick for the best game in 5A this week. Washington has a 2-1 record as does Skiatook and both teams look to have a good year. Pryor, Miami, Rogers, and Bixby are all at 1-2. Bixby is by far the surprise of this district, due to their losing record. In fact Bixby has only scored 17 total points in 3 games. They will have to get better if they hope to make a playoff run. Hale is last team in this district with an 0-3 record.
5A-4 has really shown they may not be up to the task of 5A level football. Tulsa Central, standing at 3-0, leads the district with Tulsa East Central and Ada following at 2-1. Coweta registers in at 1-2 with the balance of the district at 0-3. Those teams include Stilwell, Edison, Tahlequah, and a big surprise McAlester. McAlester was a preseason favorite in 5A-4 and has not won a game yet.
I think there are four games this week of special interest. The Bishop Kelley versus Booker T. Washington game is my number one match-up in 5A. Coming in second is the Tulsa Central versus Tulsa East Central. In this game we will see if Tulsa Central is for real or if they have only been playing a weak schedule so far. The final two games are important for Bluejay ans. The Guthrie versus Durant game will tell us if we have improved and where we will stand in the district. The final score will be interesting. The same holds true for the Ardmore vs. Noble game. Although Noble lost to Ada last week this game should give us an early view of the major playoff contenders in 5A-2. The box scores for these games will be interesting come Saturday morning.
I hope everyone gets to the Homecoming and see our Jays bring home another win. Stay tuned for future updates.
