On Monday night the Guthrie Bluejays freshmen and Junior Varsity football squads traveled to Piedmont to take on the Wildcats. Both clubs came out victorious, which gave the high school a 3-0 record against Piedmont this year.
First up on Monday night, the freshmen ‘Jays took the field. The game looked to be a good match-up as both teams came into the game undefeated, but it soon proved otherwise as the Bluejays scored early and often and finished the game with 29 points on the scoreboard. Quarterback Hayden Seifert ended the night with 16 completions 269-yards and a touchdown. Running back Luke Davis had 115-yards rushing and two touchdowns thanks to great holes created by the blocking of fullback Landry Chappell and tackle Blake Belcher. Also, Davis returned a punt for a touchdown.
The defense, led by Chappell and John Clark never let the Wildcats get their footing as they shut them out. The freshmen team now has three wins and no losses.
After the freshmen game, the Junior Varsity took the field. They too beat the Wildcats with a final score of 20-0. The game was dominated by the ‘Jays defensive and offensive lines. The defense held Piedmont to 2 first downs all night, none of which came in the first half, and less than 60 yards of total offense. “We played hard and the defense stepped up and shut down their running game,” said senior cornerback Alfred Ratcliff. Defensive highlights of the night were an interception by sophomore Hunter Gates, sacks by junior Brady Blanchard and sophomores Tim Zupo and Dennis Murphy, a blocked punt by junior Blake Pruitt, and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown by Blanchard. On the offensive side, the Bluejays did a good job controlling the clock with a good running game.
The leading rusher for the ‘Jays was sophomore Derrick Kelly with 100-yards on just 16 carries.
“Our offensive line did a good job of opening holes for me and giving us time to throw,” said Kelly Beeby. Quarterback Christian Lamb had seven pass attempts and six completions for 94-yards and two touchdowns. Devonte’ McCully and Hunter Gates were on the receiving end of his touchdowns, while Dillon Turpin and Michael Watts added nice catches.
The JV now has 2 wins and 1 loss.
Both teams will take on the Western Heights Jets next Monday at the The Rock. The freshmen game will start at 5:30 p.m. and the JV will follow immediately after.
