Jays perfect on Monday night with two wins

By: Staff Reports

Even though Guthrie's freshman and Junior Varsity teams played two different schools, on Monday night at Jelsma, they each took two different approaches. The results would come out the same, however. The Freshman remained undefeated (4-0) with a 36-7 win over the Miller’s from Yukon and the JV improved their record to 3-1 with a 29-6 win over Western Heights.

The freshman ran the ball for over 250-yards against the hard-hitting Millers, and passed for almost 100 more yards.  Luke Davis showed his speed and power with four runs over 20-yards finishing the day with 194-yards on just 14 carries with two touchdowns.  Hayden Seifert threw to John Clark and Landry Chappell in the passing game to keep Yukon off balance.

The Guthrie defense gave up one big play all night, which result in the only Miller touchdown.  Blake Belcher, gave the large crowd a thrill when the big defensive end intercepted a botched screen pass and returned it 20-yards until he finally found someone to hit.

The junior varsity, took a little different approach by passing for four touchdowns, Christen Lamb spread the ball around throwing touchdowns to three different receivers, and through three quarters he was 8-10 for 97-yards with four TD’s.  Dennis Murphy and Derek Kelly, ran the ball hard all night long, which opened up Lamb and the passing game.

The defense was stingy, allowing only a few first downs, forcing turnovers and a safety.  Kolt Rineheart and Ben Schwartz led the swarming defense.
